AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Subject: Jesus' name baptism? |
Bible Note: Greetings Andrew! Thanks for your response my friend! I'll close with this: I agree with you that Scripture cannot contradict Scriture. However, there is no contradiction in this case. Greek did not have quotation marks like we do. So, "in the name of Jesus" isn't necessarily a quote of exactly what they said when baptizing. It could well be, as I pointed out before, simply a shortcut phrase. For instance, when we speak of being saved today, we include alot in that word. We include, repentance, justifation, atonement, forgiveness, sanctification, and glorification. So, saying, "I've been saved" is the same thing as saying, "I've been forgiven, justified, redeemed, sanctified, and glorified". One is just a shorter way of saying the same thing. Personally, I think this is the best explanation of the narrative passages of Acts. They simply are different ways of describing the same thing. Anyway, I too have enjoyed our discussion! I look forward to more on other issues in the future! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
