AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Bible Question: Apparently the apostles baptized in the name of Jesus. Was this a revelation from the Holy Spirit after Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? |
Bible Answer: Answer: who knows? We have no witnesses...indeed, this one-name, three-name debate is a lot of wasted energy. To argue that the precise words one uses will make or break the validity of the baptism is pointless --- worse than pointless, in fact. To argue that a "right" formula be pronounced is to say that the words are equivalent to a hocus-pocus magic spell that must be said JUST right, else the spell won't work. Just dunk 'em or sprinkle 'em or pour it over 'em, and say whatever you want to say, or whatever they want to hear. Baptism CAN be a wonderfully meaningful event, as redemptive as your spiritual state at the time can make it....it's a wonderful family and church event. But to make the words into a magic formula is to demean the spiritual value and reduce it to a sideshow. Shalom, David |
