AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Bible Question: Apparently the apostles baptized in the name of Jesus. Was this a revelation from the Holy Spirit after Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? |
Bible Answer: God gave Jesus authority to do miracles, then Jesus gave us that same authority. And in His authority we are to baptized in the name of, or by the authority of the three persons. Some agure that these are not names, but the dictionary says that the word NAME is "any word: or "title" by which any person or thing is known. This is not just any Father, any Son, or any Holy Spirit, but it is "the Father" of Jesus Christ, and "the Son" of the Father, and "the Holy Spirit" the third person of the Divine Trinity. Any Bible reader would know who these three persons are if mention by these names in any scripture. Those who believe in Christ and the gospel are to be "baptized" with water. This represents their covenant pledge to renounce immorality, the world and their own snful nature, and to unreservedly commit themselves to Christ and his kingdom purposes (Acts 22:16). Christ will be with his obedient followers in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (v.20; Acts 1:23; 18:20). They are to go to all natons and witness only after they are "clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8) |
