NASB | Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Bible Question: Apparently the apostles baptized in the name of Jesus. Was this a revelation from the Holy Spirit after Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? |
Bible Answer: To say in the name of Jesus Christ in Acts 2:38 has to be viewed in its context, place and time. Peter said so soon after Jesus Christ had been crucified by the same people who were saying to the desciples "these are drunk" because of their not understanding the working of the Holy Spirit. I think it should not be viewed as changing or contradicting what Jesus Himself had said, bearing in mind that Jesus had said " I and my Father are One". I, further, want to suggest that Peter's statement should not construed as making a doctrine or teaching to cause unnecessary division in the body of Christ. Further, Jesus did not say when you baptize people [immense people into water] you must SAY in the Name of the of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Rather people are baptized in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Not that each time we put people under water we've got to say that, but, that a person when he/she is baptized, he/she has got to be made aware of the fact that as there are so many names on the planet earth, he/she is now getting baptized in the NAME above all other names. |
