AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Subject: Does Jesus' name satisfy Matt 28:19? |
Bible Note: Dear Savannah, Greetings in Jesus' name! And I beg to disagree with your disagreement. (your turn! :-)) If Paul wanted to say that by grace you have been *given the opportunity to be* saved, I think he would have said it. My friend, IMHO, I see there are verses on either side of this debate. I always choose to err on the side of more grace, not less. I call it the LCD, or lowest common denominator of God's grace. When you choose to add something else, problems arise. Some believers think that baptism(s) are works because there are those that manifest them as works. I personally consider baptism to be God's will (desire) for us, but not a requirement for salvation. As to repentance, most Christians I have met believe that repentance is initiated by the quickening of the Holy Spirit (conviction). This is why I believe that the Holy Spirit is the instigator of all 'decisions' for Christ. As to 'automatic' baptism of the Holy Spirit, I do not see evidence of this in many people. Instead I see sanctification starting upon being apprehended by God, and continuing until we meet the Lord. No, belief cannot be works because you don't 'do' it. "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1 NASB. About the rapture, I tend to stay away from end-time theory. All I can say is that I am preparing for His coming, but my heart is here and now, serving God and His people, preaching the Good News to the lost and the found. I agree about common sense! It is one of my favorite things. :-) Some churches DO discriminate between those baptized and those not. Maybe not outwardly, but in their hearts. Same with the 'baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues.' Why? Because they have made them 'works,' it seems. Keep thinking! It is now evening in Japan, and my thought processes are winding down. Blessings and peace in Christ Jesus, charis |
