1 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | Hank | 38874
Tim, you and a handful of my other forum buddies continue to be sharper than razor soup on Scripture! (I thought this 'razor soup' description would carry a lot of weight coming from an Arkansas Razorback. I know you are deeply impressed :-) ) .... Well, on the baptismal 'formula,' I've witnessed scores of baptisms in my day and always the minister has said 'in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.' Somehow I've always felt comfortable with this 'formula.' Still and all, I think that it is the spirit, not the words themselves, in which any of Jesus' commandments is carried out that is the more important consideration. I think it moot to opine, as some tend to do, on what exactly the Apostles may have said (if anything) before or after carrying out Christ's commandment to be baptized. Some may have simply baptized without verbal accompaniment, with the tacit understanding that the ordinance was being carried out in obedience to their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Again, I have no problem at all with the 'foruma.' But I am saying that the act of obedience itself, i.e., baptism, and the spirit in which it is obeyed, takes precedence over the formulaic announcement of it. --Hank
2 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | charis | 38985
Dear Hank, Greetings in the name of Jesus! Since the primary purpose of water baptism is the cleansing work of God (sanctification by the Holy Spirit) in the new life of the believer, I would agree that the attitude and heart of the believer is more important than the words spoken by the baptizer (baptist?). IMHO, this would still lead us to: "always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;" Ephesians 5:20 NASB. and, "Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father." Colossians 3:17 NASB. Blessings, my friend, in Christ Jesus, charis |
