1 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | Morant61 | 38860
Greetings Andrew! Please, just call me Tim! It feels way to formal to be addressed by my full name! :-) This may be splitting hairs, but I believe that there is a difference between saying that the Holy Spirit helped you understand what the Bible was saying and saying that the Holy Spirit revealed something to you which isn't in the text. The first statement is Biblically sound, while the second is not! We have the inspired, inerrant Word of God, which is to be our sole source of faith, rule, and practice. Anything beyond it's pages is simply speculation and has no authority. Just out of curiosity, if Mt. 28:19 is very clear, as you agreed, then why did the Holy Spirit have to reveal something else to you? It seems that if the verse is clear, it is clear! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

2 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | ATJ | 38878
Dear Tim, Inorder for us to understand anything, the Holy Spirit must first reveal this unto us. After He reveals it to us, He gives us understanding. You see once the Spirit reveals something to you then their is no need for speculation. There is no need to go beyond the pages of the Bible, but there is a need to understand what the pages of the Bible are saying. For ex., why did Jesus say to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost? While the Apostles baptized in the name of Jesus. There is no scripture written that say, Jesus said to baptize this way because... Therefore the Spirit must reveal to us what this means. There are many scriptures that give perfect understanding to why the Apostles baptized in the name of Jesus. But even these scriptures must be revealed, otherwise we still will not be able to get any understanding. Why? Because we are following the letter and not the Spirit. Matt 28:19 is clear in what it says, but the understanding of it is not clear once you read Act 2:38. As a result, it is not something else that needs to be revealed, but the relationship between Matt 28:19 and Acts 2:38 needs to be revealed. I am a firm believer in the fact that all scripture work together and cannot contradict each another. Now if the Spirit does not reveal this unto us, then there is a conflict about Jesus saying baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, and the Apostles baptizing in the name of Jesus. It is same Apostles who say to follow in their footsteps. This is the reason that scriptures must be revealed. Remember this Tim, there is deepness in all scripture. I have studied some of the same scriptures over and over again, but every time, God reveals the scriptures in more and more depth to me. I tried to be as brief as possible, so hopefully this answers your question. If not, or you have something else for me then just write back. It has been a pleasure talking with ya. Andrew Jr |

3 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | Morant61 | 38886
Greetings Andrew! Thanks for your response my friend! I'll close with this: I agree with you that Scripture cannot contradict Scriture. However, there is no contradiction in this case. Greek did not have quotation marks like we do. So, "in the name of Jesus" isn't necessarily a quote of exactly what they said when baptizing. It could well be, as I pointed out before, simply a shortcut phrase. For instance, when we speak of being saved today, we include alot in that word. We include, repentance, justifation, atonement, forgiveness, sanctification, and glorification. So, saying, "I've been saved" is the same thing as saying, "I've been forgiven, justified, redeemed, sanctified, and glorified". One is just a shorter way of saying the same thing. Personally, I think this is the best explanation of the narrative passages of Acts. They simply are different ways of describing the same thing. Anyway, I too have enjoyed our discussion! I look forward to more on other issues in the future! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
