1 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | ATJ | 38845
I am not denying that Jesus told them to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost after his resurrection. What I am saying is that Jesus had already taught them to baptize before his resurrection, which you seem to deny. This is why it is so important that the Holy Spirit reveals the word unto us, because to many people read without understanding. The Apostles only demostrated the things that Jesus had already taught them. It was the Holy Spirit that gave them their wisdom and understanding. The disciples which later became Apostles baptized before Jesus had died and resurrected. In what name do you think that they baptized? Now if Jesus had already taught them to baptize and commanded them to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, would the Apostles do anything contrary to the commandments that Jesus had given them? Therefore it must have been the same Jesus that taught them to baptize in his name after his resurrectio. Why else would they baptize in the name of Jesus? It is the resurrection of Jesus that gives us Salvation. Was the resurrection of Jesus preached while Jesus was on the earth? No. After Jesus ascended to heaven and on the day of Pentacost, the Apostle then preached Jesus Christ. Now noticed what name the Apostles baptized in, after they preached Christ. Was this contrary to what Jesus told them? No, because Peter states, that they TESTIFY OF THE THINGS WHICH THEY HAD BOTH HEARD AND SEEN. Therefore it must have been Jesus who taught them to baptize in his name. Luke 24:45 Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures Luke 24:46 And said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day. Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached IN HIS NAME among all nations, beginning at Jeruselem. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptize everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Andrew Jr. |

2 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | Morant61 | 38848
Greetings Andrew! The only problem with your explanation my friend is that it is pure speculation. We don't know if they were taught to baptize in any name at all prior to Matt. 28:19. However, we are clearly told in Mt. 28:19 that they were to baptize in the name of all three! The narrative data of Acts can be interpreted several possible ways. 1) The phrase "in the name of Jesus" could be a shortened form of the longer phrase, with the longer phrase being assumed in light of Mt. 28:19. 2) The phrase "in the name of Jesus" may not have been used in the actual baptism at all, but could have referred to being baptized by the authority of Jesus. 3) The disciples may have felt that Mt. 28:19 was not meant to be a strict formula and the phrase "in the name of Jesus" was sufficent. Any of these options is possible! This is why Reformer Joe said in one of his posts that the accounts of Acts are simply not clear, while Mt. 28:19 is very clear. It is the only verse in the entire Bible which deals with how baptism should be done. The rest are descriptions, thus may not include every detail. However, it is pointless to speculate about what Jesus may or may not have taught them prior to Mt. 28:19, since there is no Biblical record of that teaching. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
