1 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | Ray | 29642 | ||
Hi RevRobert, I think that the point is well taken that the Holy Spirit coming upon Him places them both at the same place and at the same time; two distinct Persons. Let me tell you that I have 1 John 5:7 in my personal copy. I believe that it should be in the text and not in the margin. But I think that you would do well to consider that the word "one" is not capitalized. The Lord God is one God. Jesus is God so He is called the Holy One. The Holy Spirit is "one called alongside to help". In other words the three Persons are one thing in essence. Another thing to note is our verse in the margin says that the literal reading for the last words of verse 8 is "and the three are *for the one thing." "For the one thing" would refer back to "and these three are one"[thing, essence]. Brackets are mine. I have written elsewhere on the forum about this verse but here again is my read of it. 1 John 5:8, "For there are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth, the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are for the one thing." As far as verse 13 is concerned, the name of the Son of God is Jesus and that is who we believe in for eternal life. Verse 20 says, "This is the true God and eternal life." Later, Ray |
