1 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | charis | 257
Apparently the apostles baptized in the name of Jesus. Was this a revelation from the Holy Spirit after Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?

God gave Jesus authority to do miracles, then Jesus gave us that same authority. And in His authority we are to baptized in the name of, or by the authority of the three persons. Some agure that these are not names, but the dictionary says that the word NAME is "any word: or "title" by which any person or thing is known. This is not just any Father, any Son, or any Holy Spirit, but it is "the Father" of Jesus Christ, and "the Son" of the Father, and "the Holy Spirit" the third person of the Divine Trinity. Any Bible reader would know who these three persons are if mention by these names in any scripture. Those who believe in Christ and the gospel are to be "baptized" with water. This represents their covenant pledge to renounce immorality, the world and their own snful nature, and to unreservedly commit themselves to Christ and his kingdom purposes (Acts 22:16). Christ will be with his obedient followers in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (v.20; Acts 1:23; 18:20). They are to go to all natons and witness only after they are "clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8) |

Dear Lourdes, Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus! Thank you for your answer and Scripture references. However, I do not see an answer to my question. Truly, as written in Acts 1:8... "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." NASB But soon after this 'empowerment' the disciples baptized in the name of Jesus. Were they disobedient to Matthew 28:19? Are there any references to water baptism done in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Please note that I am NOT "Jesus-only" or against the Trinity. Blessings and peace! Hi Charis, God Bless you. In response to your question, I was not able to find any reference to the water baptism in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit but in Matt. 28:19. Now I don't know if Jesus' disciples were being disobedient to this command, but if they were wouldn't the Bible have say it. Strong #907 Greek (baptizo) means to baptize, to wash #908 Greek (baptisma) means baptism #909 Greek (baptismos) means baptism, ceremonial washing, to wash. So you can see it depends what kind of baptism it is refering too. When you are baptize in water it would refer a washing away of the old and being in the new, also it simbolizes the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now when Jesus, Paul and Peter said recieve the baptism of the Holy Spirit I would assume that it means to recieve power to witness to others and to be faithful to Jesus Christ no matter the consequences that might come against us. Take for example Peter I would assume that he was bapitize in water because if I'm not mistaken he was one of John the baotist disciple, when Jesus was to be crucify Peter denied Jesus 3 times. It wasn't after he recieved the baptism of the Holy Spirit (power) that he was able to stand firm and be a true witness to Jesus Christ. I hope that this can help you in some way and if it isn't I only thing to do is prayer so that God thru His Spirit and reveal to us the correct answer in the name of Jesus Christ. God Bless you always. Lourdes |
