1 | Jesus' name baptism? | Acts 2:38 | kalos | 271 | ||
'According to Jesus [in Matt 28:19], baptism is to be administered "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" . . . Evangelicals accept this verse as Jesus' words and agree that the Trinitarian formula was spoken by the Son of God himself.' (NRSV Harper Study Bible, note at Matt 28:19) Acts 2:38 is 'not a contradiction to the fuller formula given in Matt 28:19. In Acts the abbreviated form emphasizes the distinctive quality of this baptism, for Jesus is now included in a way that He was not in John's baptism . . . Greetings Kalos! This is a very old thread but I do have a question about this verse. So I'm putting it out there to some of the participants. The following is a statement from a denominational web site: "As with the first Christians, when a person repents and is baptized their sins are forgiven and the Holy Spirit begins to work in their life. (Acts 2:36-41; Romans 8:5-11)" I am troubled by this, not because I am an unbaptized believer, but because many who I know to be born again believers have not been immersed! It just doesn't "sit" with me that physical baptism is a prerequiste for forgiveness. Any comments? Blessings, Mommapbs |

The word water at John 3:5, has nothing to do with Baptism, it refers to amniotic fluid, and therefore physical birth, as opposed to Spiritual birth. In case there is any doubt as to what was intended to be undrestood, then verse 6 makes this clear, as it repeats verse 5, but uses the word flesh in place of water. Water Baptism follows Spiritual re-birth, it does not preceed it as is made clear at Acts 2:38, Please do not put the cart before the horse. |
