1 | How can anyone be saved? | 1 Cor 2:14 | John Reformed | 60657 | ||
Dear Cyclist, Heb 2:9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. Heb 2:10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. When attempting to interpret a verse in which a particular word may have two different meanings, it is a good idea to look at the context in which the word in question appears. If the context does not provide a clear answer then we must look at verses elsewhere in Sripture for verses that are clear. In this case however, I think that I can safely say: If You are asking: Did Jesus die for everyone in the world, I would say no. I believe He died for everyone who the Father gave to Him. My reason is derived from 1.)" that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone." It is by grace that those who are saved recieve the gift of faith. 2) "in bringing many sons to glory" definitely limits the number. "... for God to have laid the sins of all men on Christ would mean that as regards the lost He would be punishing their sins twice, once in Christ, and then again in them. Certainly that would be unjust. If Christ paid their debt, they are free, and the Holy Spirit would invariably bring them to faith and repentance. If the atonement was truly unlimited, it would mean that Christ died for multitudes whose fate already had been determined, who already were in hell at the time He suffered. If the atonement merely nullified the sentence that was against man so as to give him a new chance if he would exercise faith and obedience, it would mean that God was placing him on test again as was his ancestor Adam. But that kind of a test was tried and had its outcome long ago, even in a far more favorable environment. Carried to its logical conclusion, the theory of unlimited atonement leads to absurdity." (Loraine Boettner). Hope this helps, John |

John, Thanks! You always take time to respond. What do you think? Do you think that the paragraph that is quoted in your post is revelation from, or inspired by, God our Father? I'm sorry but I haven't done much reading other than the Word so I do not know the author nor the author's backround, that's why I am asking. Cyclist I will bless the Lord at all times! His praise shall continually be in my mouth! |

Dear Cyclist, The paragraph I quoted is merely that of a man. A very learned and God fearing man, who like you and me share our understanding of Sripture with one another. That being said, I do believe what he has said is an accurate statement. John |

Dear Brother John, Praise be to God our Father, who created the heavens and the earth and the seas and all that there is therein, all things seen and unseen, created not by hands, but by God! Yes, praise be to our heavenly Father! As I told you my brother, I have been following this thread the best that I can. I must say that it is getting long! Some scripture came to mind as I consider the subject and the discussion. Keep in mind that I am not as mature in the faith and in the knowledge of the Word as others on this forum, whom I consider to be my elders in Christ, you included, so, I found it necessary to go directly to God's Word. Now taking into consideration that I consider these to be elders, I found myself tempted to side with this one or that one. Here are the scriptures that have helped me: 1 Cor 1:9 God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Cor 1:10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. 1 Cor 1:11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you. 1 Cor 1:12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ."1 Cor 1:13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1 Cor 4:20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power. John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. John 15:11 "These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. John 15:12 "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. John 15:14 "You are My friends if you do what I command you. I love each one in Christ that are regulars, my elders, on this forum and have really grown by reading postings by all of you. Thank you! Your brother in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, Cyclist I will bless the Lord at all times! His prasie shall continually be in my mouth! |

Cyclist, I praise God for you my brother! I understand your concern regarding doctrinal differences. And I must confess that at times I should have hit delete instead of send. I take comfort in knowing that sanctification is a process. Perfection will come only upon the day we are finally glorified. In the meantime I groan along with Paul, "I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good." (Rom 7:21) Some of those who rile me up the worst are those who I love the best. But, thank God, I have never read words of hate spoken here. Thanks for sharing those verses with me. I need them all! God Bless Brother, John |

Dear brother John, It was a cool crisp morning in east central IL this morning. It took about 5 miles before my body warmed up when riding my bicycle. The sun rise was beautiful! How beautiful are the creations of God! Praise God for the beautiful things He has created! Praise Him for giving His only begotten Son for us, who did not deserve it, but, He loved us! Dear Brother, I'm still following this thread somewhat, I haven't been able to keep up with all of the postings, and, my computer "groans" when I click on one of them. I know that this is a forum, of the which I am very thankful for, but, man, there is a little tension in some of the postings. I enjoy being involved with, and seeing some healthy discussion, and even disagreement, but, it hurts to see the children of God "bear teeth". I'm trying to follow this thread because of you, because of our discussion back in March on Romans 9. I really had a "growth spurt" then. We know from the Word that GOD is LOVE! Here is some more scripture. I'm not posting as one in authority be any means. You know that I am one of the least in knowledge as a forum member. I'm simply posting this because you are in my prayers, and, you really helped me to grow. 1 Cor 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 1 Cor 13:3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 1 Cor 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 1 Cor 13:5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 1 Cor 13:6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 1 Cor 13:7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Cor 13:8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. God bless you brother! Cyclist I will bless the Lord at all times! His praise shall continually be in my mouth! |

Thank You Cyclist, The trouble that each christian on the forum has is the same trouble that plagued Paul. Rom 7:15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. Not that I hate all I have said but that there is much I regret having said. Some times I get pious other times i want to hurt someone because I feel I'm the injured party. All alot of sin and nonsense. Sanctification is a process and after I sin and God grants me repentence, I feel as if another step has been forward. Of course I must go to my brother and confess my sin against him and that tends to work humility and love in our lives. Thank you so much brother Cyclist for your prayers on my behalf. And if God has enabled me to be of any help, I give Him all the Praise and all the Glory for He alone is Worthy! Your Brother, John |
