Hank, I have provided Scripture for Unconditional Election. I have yet to see any at all that proves that we elect ourselves. Or if you prefer: that God elects people conditional to their positive response to the gospel. All I get from your side is....God would'nt do that....it's unfair!!! Prove it Scripturally and I will believe it. My tradition comes a distant second to my Bible. John |

John What you have provided is “election proof texts” that intrinsically stand in opposition to the nature of God, in contradiction to scripture and ignore the most basic of all scripture passages. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. If you want to proof text we can to that all day, but that will prove nothing for I can proof text right back at you. As I stated earlier at last count I think there is a one for one tie of texts the suggest election versus those that suggest we are given a choice. We can go all day saying your not reading it right, and this argument has been perpetuated for over 400 years. Justify election to these most basic truths of the Bible. John 1:9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. EdB |

Justify election to these most basic truths of the Bible. John 1:9 Dear Hank, Fortunately I just completed an answer for Pastor Glenn on John 1:9. In case you have'nt seen it here it is: You cited next: John 1:9 "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world." And your conclusion was: " Every man has enough "light" to make the right choice". My arguement is NOT, and has never been, against man's freedom to choose. My arguement is against his ability to choose good in a way pleasing unto God! Natural man is FREE to choose Christ (life) but DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY because he hates Christ! John 3:20 "For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed". John says everyone who does evil HATES THE LIGHT. Which means every mother's son of us hated Him as well. For we all do evil. “Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil” (Jer. 13:23). Hank I would add that I do not deny that men have been enlightened to the fact that God is. Paul informs us in romans Rom 1:19-21 "because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. The fact that we all are enlightened does not mean we have the ability to act positively upon it, as the text clearly shows. It in fact says natural man always reacts negatively. (re-read texts above if you disagree.) Good Night for now, John John |

John John you appended this on to my thread so I assume you talking to me but calling me Hank :-) "My arguement is NOT, and has never been, against man's freedom to choose. My arguement is against his ability to choose good in a way pleasing unto God! Natural man is FREE to choose Christ (life) but DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY because he hates Christ! " That is no choice at all the decision was made for you. That is like a parent saying you have a choice go with us or stay home now go get in the car. EdB |

Hi Ed, Sorry about the mixup of names. I said: " Natural man is FREE to choose Christ (life) but DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY because he hates Christ!" You replied: "That is no choice at all the decision was made for you. That is like a parent saying you have a choice go with us or stay home now go get in the car." Your characterization of my position is unclear to me. It is like a parent (God) saying you (the sinner) have a choice, go with us (believe in Christ) or stay home (die in or sin) now get into the car (believe and be saved)....This is my understanding of your story. Where it breaks down is we don't know what happens next. Do the parents pick the boy up and stick him in the car and force him to go? or do they simply command him to get in the car but leave the final decision to him? If he is forced to go, it would not agree with my understanding of election. If he was left to follow his desire to stay home in spite of his parents wishes and commands, It would agree with my understanding of election. Which one is it? John |

A Different Analogy ................................ My friends EdB and John, I believe that I know what EdB is trying to communicate, and why John might be confused, and therefore suggest an alternate analogy to get the idea across. ................................... Imagine a parent who has twin children, Tom and Jerry. The parent, through genetic engineering, caused both of their children to be born without any legs. Then when they were both 10 years old, the parent got a set of artificial legs for Tom so that he could walk, but they did not get any legs for Jerry. Then one day the parent decides to go for a walk to the ice cream store. The parent invites both children to walk with them, but says it is their choice. Tom can’t pass up the opportunity for ice cream, and gladly accepts. Jerry however doesn’t have any legs, and so he doesn’t have the ability to go. The question is, “Does Jerry really have a choice to walk to the store if he has been born without any legs?” For that matter, “If the ice cream is truly irresistable, then does Tom have a real choice either?” ................................... I hope that this helps to clarify the discussion between you, and that something good actually comes out of it. |

Sir Pent Most excellent analogy. I think the Holy spirit had his hand in this. I wish everyone would reference this analogy either pro or con election. EdB |
