1 | How can anyone be saved? | 1 Cor 2:14 | John Reformed | 60564
Yes Ed, The gospel is an open invitation to all, however it saves only those whosoever believe. It does not save the "world". That is univeral salvation and I know you don't believe THAT! The term "elect" identfies that group of people who have in the past, are now or who will in the future place faith in Christ for salvation. Elect is not a theological term created by calvinists. It is a Biblical term given us by God. John |

2 | How can anyone be saved? | 1 Cor 2:14 | EdB | 60608
John When the high priest went into the Holy of Holies was it to atone for the sins of the nation of Israel or just the elect of Israel? Elect isn't mentioned in the OT so it was for all of the children of Israel. The whole of Hebrews proves Jesus to be the "Better", the better high priest, the better sacrifice and etc. If Jesus was the better and the blood of bulls paid the price for the nation of Israel not just the elect why would you think Jesus came just for the elect? Your right elect is a Biblical term that Calvin mutilated in his attempt to eradicate the last vestiges of Catholicism from any place of orthodoxy. In other words if the Pope said up Calvin said down. EdB |

Dear Ed, If I am misled in my understanding of the term "elect" or "election" please explain to me the real meaning of the word. I understand elect to mean "chose or chosen". I did a word search on "chosen" and found this verse: Deut 14:2 "For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth". (I wonder why God did not choose all the people in the world?) Would you not say that "chosen" in the OT is the same as "elected" in the NT? Mark 13: "Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days." Thanks John |

4 | How can anyone be saved? | 1 Cor 2:14 | EdB | 60663
John Once we are in Christ we are God's elect. Your right the Hebrew nation was chosen to bless all the nations of the world, by bringing forth a savior. In the Old Testament any gentile that that converted to Judaism could become part of the chosen. We are chose to have the blessings of God to experience eternal life, to rule and reign with Christ because we have came into salvation through a belief in Jesus Christ. Again the blood atoned for the sins of all, should not Jesus' sacrifice do as much? Elect is an adjective not a verb, When we become children of God through salvation God refers to us as his elect, His chosen, His children, His nation, His priest, His peculiar people. Calvin turned this meaning around and made election a verb or process that simply does not hold with the rest of the scripture. EdB |

John I believe again the word elect was a adjective and was used in reference to the all the children of Israel. We know however there were those that refused to obey God and were killed or cast out. EdB |
