1 | How can anyone be saved? | 1 Cor 2:14 | Lionstrong | 60776 | ||
Hi Ray, What's your scriptural support for your belief? I think Paul didn't feel any warm fuzzies while he was on his was to Damascus and the Lord knocked him on his behind! Concerning the psychology of salvation, the Scripture has little or nothing to say about our emotional state at the time we come to believe the Gospel. I find no scriptural support that we have to feel loved by God before we believe. One of God's purposes, however, is that we come to KNOW the love of Christ in all its dimensions once we are saved. (Eph 3:18,19) Peace, |

Hi Lionstrong, 1 Timothy 1:5, "But the GOAL of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith." Paul says of his encounter on the road to Damascus in 1 Timothy 1:13, "even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. And yet I was shown mercy, because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord/ was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus." Paul was put into service because God considered him faithful. And the grace of the Lord was abundant. Similarly, the woman at the well was found faithful to God's word and testified, "He/ told me all the things that I have done." Can you not hear her say within herself, "Yet He loves me." Ephesians 5:1, "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you, and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God/ as a fragrant aroma." Ephesians 3:5, "which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in [by] the *spirit;...fellow partakers of [His] promise in Christ/Jesus." Philippians 3:12, "Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ/Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on TOWARD THE GOAL for the prize of the upward call of God in (Christ) Jesus." Paul was called to be a minister because of God's love and the power of Jesus. He promised power and what is more powerful than love. That is our goal, that is the kind of spirit that we should be of. Ephesians 3:16, "that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, BEING ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ/ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to the fullness of God." We have His Spirit in the inner man and we have the spirit of love within ourselves also. We have **Christ dwelling in our hearts through faith, and we are rooted and grounded in love. Philippians 4:5, "Let your forbearing spirit be known to all men. The **Lord is near." Ezekiel 37 is a good passage to see the spirit and the Spirit within us. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Ray! Have I misunderstood you or did you not write, "a person has to FEEL loved by God BEFORE he can put his trust in Him and believe.... "[my caps]? Most of the Scripture you gave had to do with one AFTER he believes. None of the Scripture you presented had to do with how the person felt about God's love BEFORE they believed. Nor did they make how one felt a necessity for faith. Even what you presented concerning Paul's conversion had to do with what he realized after he was saved from the wrath of God, not what his emotional (how he felt) state was before he was saved. I liked all the Scripture you gave. It was a good try, but none of it supported your position that a person HAS to feel loved by God before he can put his trust in Him and believe. The closest thing to any psychological requirement prior to faith that I see in Scripture is that we UNDERSTAND the Gospel (Rom 10:13-17) and repent (Mark 1:15). Emotion is not a prerequisite to faith. Generally, emotion follows faith. 1 Thess 1:6, "You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit..." Acts 2:41 So then, those who had [gladly, KJV(see Greek)] received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. Peace, |

Hi Lionstrong, The sentence sounded right to me when I wrote it. I still think that the GOAL in our instruction and witnessing should be that the person would feel the love of God. Paul was shown the love of God. 1 Tim 1:14, "and the grace of our Lord/ was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus." This faith and love that is found in Christ Jesus is the same faith and love that is found in mothers who are bearing and rearing the children. See 1 Timothy 1:15 Do you know any child or Christian, that is living an abundant life, that doesn' t know and feel that he/she is loved? The words love and faith are close together in 2 Timothy 2:22 also. "Now flee from youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the (Lord) from a PURE HEART." 1 Timothy 1:5b, "...which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of (God) which is by faith. But the goal of our instruction is love from a PURE HEART and a good conscience and a sincere faith." The time that a person does not feel loved by God when first professing faith might be when that person has yet a sin of which he has not repented. Or one that he is struggling with yet. And as your Mark 1:15 reference says, "repent and believe the gospel of God." The goal of our instruction is love, but we can not know or control a person's feelings about his relationship with God. So I believe that God wants believers to feel loved ; because we are. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Ray, You say, "the GOAL in our instruction and witnessing should be that the person would FEEL [my caps] the love of God." And you believe that God wants believers to FEEL loved. Yet you provide no scriptural support for these sentiments. You quote an excellent verse where Paul says the goal of our instruction is love, then you ignore it and say that the goal is to FEEL love. Paul's is practical; yours is emotional. I'll take Paul's. Peace, From the hip |

Hi Lionstrong, I asked you if you knew any child or Christian, living an abundant life, who did not know or feel that he/she was loved. Would you be happy if I left out feelings and just had the knowing? 1 John 5:13, "These things I have written to your who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life." If you want to know it but not feel it, that's up to you I guess. Practically speaking, it does me no good that my wife knows that I love her, if she does not feel loved for one reason or another. (For instance, if I spend more time on the computer than I do talking to her). Now how practical is that? :) Gotta go take my wife out to dinner. From the heart, Ray |
