Subject: Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? |
Bible Note: Greetings Graceful! Your comments on Hebrews were excellent! :-) John 20:17 and Acts 1:9 make it very clear that Jesus would and did ascend to Heaven. The question though is whether He did it prior to Acts 1:9. The comment of Jesus in John 20:17 is in the present tense, "I am ascending...". A present tense can sometimes be understood in much the same way as a future tense when it is describing a future event or action which is so certain that it can be described as present. This seems to be the case in John 20:17. One Greek authority suggests the following meaning for Jesus' comment: "Stop clinging to Me. I have not yet ascended to My Father, it is true. But I shall certainly do so. Tell this to My brothers." (Leon Morris, 'The Gospel According to John' from the New International Commentary on the New Testament, pg. 841.) What does this mean? Simply this: There is no indication that Jesus ascended to Heaven until Acts 1:9. Both Mary and Thomas were able to touch Him, so there does not seem to be any change in Jesus from the time He met Mary until the time He met Thomas. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
