Subject: Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? |
Bible Note: Greetings Graceful! I noticed that you did not believe that praying 'if it be thy will' is Biblical. However, Jesus did in fact pray this very prayer. Check out Luke 22:42: "??Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.?" Here, the Greek text is exactly equivalent to "if it be they will". It literally says, "...if you are willing, take this cup from me." This is a conditional prayer. It can't be translated 'since you are willing...' because God did not in fact take this cup from Jesus. Therefore, Jesus prayed for something that God did not in fact do. God's will was different that Jesus' prayer. The request Jesus made was real, but He qualified it with '...not my will, but your will be done'. James 4:15 uses this same phrase: "Instead, you ought to say, ??If it is the Lord?s will, we will live and do this or that.?" While it is true that this passage does not specifically address prayer, it does address the attitude that Christian's ought to have about their daily lives, and James encourages Christians to say - 'if the Lord is willing'. Further, 1 John 5:14 says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us." This a great promise of answered prayer, if we ask according to His will. God's will is not always as clear as we might think. Even the apostles were not always sure. For example, Paul said in 1 Cor. 4:19: "But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have." The advantage of praying 'if it be Thy will' is simply this: It demonstrates that I am committed to the Lordship of Christ. I have sold out completly to Him and am willing to be used in any way that He sees fit, not that I see fit. If God chooses to bless me with wealth and health, so be it. If God chooses to allow me to endure poverty and sickness, so be it. Either way, I will be His servant. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
