1 | Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? | Luke 23:46 | Morant61 | 66208
Greetings Graceful! Your comments on Hebrews were excellent! :-) John 20:17 and Acts 1:9 make it very clear that Jesus would and did ascend to Heaven. The question though is whether He did it prior to Acts 1:9. The comment of Jesus in John 20:17 is in the present tense, "I am ascending...". A present tense can sometimes be understood in much the same way as a future tense when it is describing a future event or action which is so certain that it can be described as present. This seems to be the case in John 20:17. One Greek authority suggests the following meaning for Jesus' comment: "Stop clinging to Me. I have not yet ascended to My Father, it is true. But I shall certainly do so. Tell this to My brothers." (Leon Morris, 'The Gospel According to John' from the New International Commentary on the New Testament, pg. 841.) What does this mean? Simply this: There is no indication that Jesus ascended to Heaven until Acts 1:9. Both Mary and Thomas were able to touch Him, so there does not seem to be any change in Jesus from the time He met Mary until the time He met Thomas. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

2 | Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? | Luke 23:46 | gracefull | 66212
Hi Tim.. So if we stay true to the Old Testament pattern we know Jesus had to have ascended placing His blood on the alter in the heavenly Holy of Holies, and if the Old Covenant was the symbolic pattern we can safely say Jesus had to do likewise...When do you believe this took place? After the forty days? Please read my post to Meredith concerning the Greek word for touch and coment. Your sister in Christ Your sister in Christ |

3 | Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? | Luke 23:46 | Reformer Joe | 66218
Even if the altar in heaven is a literal one, there is no reason to believe that Jesus had to have placed His blood there prior to the Ascension in Acts 1:9.
4 | Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? | Luke 23:46 | gracefull | 66221
Thanks you Tim for your response, but you did not answer the main question. According to Hebrews 9:23-24 ...but the heavenly things themselves There is quite a strong indication that He ascended here when He said He was going to. Again, why else would he send Mary with the message? And if not then, When? In Jesus |

I don't mean this to be curt, but could you explain why it is so important to your theology that Jesus ascended into heaven bewteen the Resurrection and Acts 1:9? I suppose Jesus could have if He had wanted to, but why are you so passionate about insisting that He actually DID? Thanks! --Joe! |

6 | Did Jesus suffer in hell when he died? | Luke 23:46 | gracefull | 66552
Joe.. I suppose it is so important to my theology because it is what I believe I see in the Word. You made a statement and I disagree.. a good Bible study should make available all perspectives and understandings, then work toward truth as revealed by the Holy Spirit as best we can. One that is 'controlled' will become like the dead sea. No inlet or outlet, only people talking who agree..everyone else will leave. |

I am afraid that you misunderstood what I meant in my post. Jesus very well may have ascended between the Resurrection and Acts 1:9. I personally do not hold that the Bible teaches such a thing, but neither my faith in Jesus Christ, nor my understanding of who He is and what He accomplished on my behalf, nor the manner of my obedience to Him is in any way affected by such a thing. In my opinion, you are passionately arguing something that, in the long run, doesn't change the tenets of Christianity in any significant way at all. --Joe! |
