1 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | roviear | 30059
Perhaps because we, as humans, really cannot grasp the concept of eternity and feel that we must continue to earn salvation. In the OT, especially Exodus, God laid the law down to Moses as to how Jews (believers) could get into heaven. However, in the NT, the law was summarized into one commandment (see also Rom 13:9-10). Is eternal salvation really as simple as repenting and accepting the gift of Jesus Christ? Yes, and once you do, you cannot give the gift back. Now, you can fall off the path and end up still going to Hell. But that is another discussion.

You write: "In the OT, especially Exodus, God laid the law down to Moses as to how Jews (believers) could get into heaven." Fact: People in the OT were justified in God's sight (saved) the same way that people in the NT era are justified -- by grace through faith plus nothing (Eph. 2:8-9). By grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. No one was ever saved or justified by keeping the Law. Not in the OT. Not in the NT. Not ever! Romans 3: 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Galatians 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Romans 4:1-5 NASB What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness TEV What shall we say, then, of Abraham, the father of our race? What was his experience? If he was put right with God by the things he did, he would have something to boast about—but not in God's sight. The scripture says, "Abraham believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous." A person who works is paid wages, but they are not regarded as a gift; they are something that has been earned. But those who depend on faith, not on deeds, and who believe in the God who declares the guilty to be innocent, it is this faith that God takes into account in order to put them right with himself. |

Hmmm...never thought about Jesus' coming as being retroactive. I did miss the faith side of things completely, didn't I? Thanks for pointing out my oversight. But then, this leads me to ask, why would God go into such great detail with the dos and don'ts (Ex. 20-end and Deut. 1-30)? I also believe Jesus mentioned that the old way was by law in conjunction with faith, but the new way is through Him with obedience. In other words, actions speak louder than words, but the actions don't mean anything if belief in God isn't motivating those actions. Reference Gen 26:5, Ex 18:20, Ezek 44:23-24. Essentially, works don't get a person anywhere without faith (OT) or Jesus (NT). I feel as if I'm drifting down the wrong path again, am I? No, I'm clarifying what I should have said and am answering my own question. Again, thank you. In Christ...
