Bible Note: Greetings FTimA! I agree with you that one must look at God's Word as a whole. However, that does not mean that one is allowed to change the meaning of clear statements of Scripture. This particular discussion has come up many times before and in every thread, the argument has been made that Paul's statement in Eph. 2:8-9 does not really mean: "You are not saved by works!" But, that it really means: "You are not saved by works alone!" Scripture is very clear about the relationship between works and salvation. Works in no way contribute to our salvation. It is because we are saved that we are able to do good works. We are not saved because we do good works, nor do we keep salvation because of our works. So, yes, let's look at Scripture as a whole! However, let's not ignore the very clear teachings of Scripture concerning works. For previous answers to your example question, search for: Morant61 and Baptism.
