Bible Note: Dear FTima, EPH 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will. You wrote: "At first glance my thought is that Paul introduces the letter to the Ephesians by explaining to them the blessing we have in a loving God who before creation knew that man would fall and He would send Jesus to earth to die for him." Paul also says we (saints) have been predestined by God . We did not choose Him; He chose us (Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love). He is speaking to God's choice in election, not the fall of mankind in Adam. " His continuous use of the pronoun “us” to me refers to mankind in general, not just Christians, not just him and the Ephesians." I do not understand how you can come to this conclusion. Their is no justification for it. The letter is 1. To the saints; 2 Grace to you; 3 who has blessed us; 4. just as He chose us; 5. He predestined us; 6. bestowed on us; 7. In Him we have redemption; :8 which He lavished on us. 9. He made known to us; 11. also we have obtained. To say that “us” to me refers to mankind in general is to force one's own presupposition on the verse. Are "all mankind in general" saints that by God's grace are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ? Chosen in Him before the foundation of the world? Predestined to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself? No. Of course not! Only God's elect have" redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace". Please reconsider your interpetation. (My wife is calling me back to the good works I do on behalf of my familly). I look forward to your reply. If I have misunderstood your post, please tell me how I did so. John Reformed |
