Bible Note: FTimA: Biblical reasons for not referring to the Holy Spirit as "it": "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you." [John 14:16,17] The Holy Spirit is called the Helper (Greek paraclete). See also John 14:26; 15:26 and 16:7. By the way, God is spirit too [John 4:24]. We don't refer to God the Father as 'it.' In like manner, neither do we refer to God the Holy Spirit nor God the Son as 'its'. We refer to things as 'its' but never to persons. --Hank |
