Bible Note: Greetings Art! I think the problem is that you are making too much of the phrase "alive again". Even in the story, the son didn't literally die! The father was simply saying that the son, who was dead to him because he was gone, was now found. Concerning Jews/Gentiles or Religious/Sinners, it does make sense in the context. Like the eldest son, the Jews were upset that the Kingdom was being extended to sinners/Gentiles. In fact, this parable sounds a lot like Rom. 11, where Paul makes the point that Israel is the natural branches of the Olive Tree. They are broken off because of unbelief, while the Gentiles are grafted in because of faith. Paul then says that the Jews will be grafted in again as well. The main thing is that a parable usually only has one point. It is not an allegory. So, every detail of the story is not necessarily significant. In this case, the story is simply an explanation of Luke 15:1-2. God rejoices when the lost are found, so of course Jesus would hang around with sinners. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
