Who is it that you refer to when you say "denominational members have such a narrow view"? Who was it that said "narrow is the way"? A secular definition of denomination is "A large group of religious congregations united under a common faith and name and organized under a single administrative and legal hierarchy." According to this definition, yes, the church of Christ is a denomination, but again, it is the only one mentioned in the bible. Whether it be church of God, church of the saints, church of Christ, church of Ephesus, Galatia, Thessalonica, etc, etc. These are all the same and are patterned after Christ's teaching, from God. I am reminded of Paul's exhortation to the Corinthian's... 1 Cor 1:10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ." 13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? We could just as well put in I am of Campbell, I am of Calvin, I am of Luther, I am of Pope John, but what does Paul say? Is CHRIST divided? |

Hank: Christ is impossible to divide. Believers can and do divide, into their own belief systems of theology. I have no problems with having denominations, having been in four different denominations myself. I appreciate the way the Southern Baptist Denomation sends out their missionaries with full support and not having to beg for funding. I disliked re-baptizing believers that were not baptized as Sourthern Baptist. When I was serving a Consertive Baptist Association church, there were some wonderful efforts they made that I saw that the others did not. They have as great interest in summer camps for youth, and make them very affordable, and often paid the kids way. American Baptist are more social issues oriented, and have a higher education requirement of their clergy. Some churches have closed communion, which I respect, but do not agree with. These are no reasons to be deviceive with one another. I am think you get the point I am trying to make. These are small issues, and for many, this still does not stop fellowship. However, when anyone says that they are the only complete absolute Chruch of Christ, and unless you are in this group then you are lost; is this not dividing Christ in the ultimate negative way? This was to whom I am refering to "denomiation members have such a narrow view". I was attempting not to mention a specfic denomination. I was under the impression we were not to mention negative remarks about specfic named denomination. When later I saw that the Church of Christ was named, I perhaps should have been more specfic. My statement was too broad, and left my remark open to misunderstanding. I see your point and thank you for asking me to justify my position. I refer often to Galations 5:6 at the end where it says "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." That certianly means, at least for me, in my mind and words, that the CHURCH OF CHRIST far exceeds any denomination or non-denomination group that calls then self whatever they so choose, as long as they are genuine believers in Jesus Christ. Should I have offend you, or anyone else please except my apology. I am sure as my wife says I must have had a "senior moment". I enjoy the Forum and I am feel now, I was rather insensitive, that I may have sent the wrong meaning of the message I was trying convay. I thank you for taking the time to invest your wisdom in me. God bless you Hank. justme |
