FTimA: Of Post ID #30407, you write "Whoever wrote this has never read Matthew 7:13-14, 21-23. Are you sure? In the first place, Post 30407 roughly half of it is composed of scriptural passages containing the direct quotations of Jesus and Paul. Do you suppose the message of Matthew 7:13-14 and 21-23 were foreign to them? The rest of the post is sound exegesis of the passages the author cites. Do you presume to know that the author was unfamiliar with your references? I myself have read your references and assure you that they are not in conflict with either the passages the author quoted nor the exegesis he gave of them. So what, if anything, are you trying to say or proove by your note: "Whoever wrote this has never read Matthew 7:13-14, 21-23." Since half the post contains direct quotations from Scripture itself, your comment leans toward the reckless and illogical, don't you think? One may as well say that whoever wrote "Hamlet" has never read "MacBeth." --Hank
3 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | FTimA | 64450
Hank and all who are interested. I will be responding by pulling pertinent information from the post I debated and following it up with a rebut. 1. Jesus emphatically pointed this out in the Gospel of John when, in reference to believers, He said, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand..." (John 10:28). In this passage, Christ explicitly declared that no one who has received eternal life will ever lose it. The last sentence here states something Jesus never said. John 10:28,29 say, "and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand." The key phrases here are “neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand” and “and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.” These two phrases introduce a 3rd person, not the individual Christian (ANYONE SNATCH THEM, NO ONE SNATCH THEM). I will agree that if I am a Christian and pattern my life after Christ that no one, if I am faithful and strong, can pull me away from my faith. This does not mean that I myself cannot become weak and fall back into worldly living. Do you see the difference? 2. The writer refers to 1 Peter 1:5. Verses 3 to 5 state, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." Just a few comments here. The first phrase in question is, "according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again". What did Jesus say to Nicodemus? "Unless one is born again (of water and spirit), he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (Jn 3:3,5) Yep, you guessed it, BAPTISM! The second phrase, "to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you." I do not dispute this. The inheritance is imperishable, undefiled, it will not fade away. It will always be there, FOR THOSE THAT OBEY THE COMMANDS OF THE LORD! Jesus said, "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you." Jesus commanded his (11) disciples to make more disciples. How? By baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then also teaching them to observe ALL things that he commanded them. If Jesus commanded his apostles to baptize they would in turn have to teach those taught to baptize. Something that was never had in the beginning cannot be lost. Until a person is baptized salvation is not had to be lost. Hank, you asked me, "Since half the post contains direct quotations from Scripture itself, your comment leans toward the reckless and illogical, don't you think? The post contains biblical references but not the passage. Only this persons assessment of the passages. Statements like, "You see, while "once saved, always saved" is true from God's perspective, man only looks at the outward appearance and thus cannot always accurately assess who is really saved in the first place." How does this person know God's perspective? How does this person know any man's perspective but his own? Doesn't this lean toward reckless and illogical? |

4 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | Hank | 64474
FTimA: In the event that you feel you are enlightening me (and other members of the forum) with new "truth" a la Alexander Campbell and his friends, please be made aware that you are not. Tonight I decided to review a large number of former threads in which two members of the "Church of Christ" were highly active. You are invited, by the way, to read their posts, and may do so through Search and typing in their user names in the appropriate box. They are RAVEN and Grace and Truth. I was not surprised to see that they presented the same old arguments on the same themes as you are presenting on the forum now, viz., (1) that the denomination known as the Church of Christ is the only true church, and all others are man-made organizations, or to use your phrase, are 'products of Satan' -- a view that is nothing short of bigotry; (2) that water baptism saves; and (3) that good works keep one saved. Additionally, these two users also told us (4) how sinful instrumental music is in the worship service, but perhaps you should remind us one more time. The Bible does not teach, and I do not subscribe to, a single one of these four points. .... FTimA, my point is this: In view of my experience, and the experience I have observed with my colleagues on the forum, in trying to debate biblical issues with you and those of your stripe, I honestly cannot view it as anything but an exercise in futility. I will not debate any issue with any man whose mind, I feel almost certain, is closed tighter than a drum. Your post to which this is a response contains statements that, by any measure with which I am acquainted, are riddled with errors, both theological and logical, but I will make no attempt at a line-by-line rebuttal of any of them. What I am saying to you, for my part in this debate, is a final farewell. I bid you every good wish for your spiritual and physical health, your happiness, and that the blessings of our Savior and Lord be multipled in you and your family. --Hank
5 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | justme | 64526
Hank: Dear Brother, I just read your note to FTimA and it is :-( that some denominational members have such a narrow views. Please, if you can, read the note I sent to FTimA today. I sent it before reading your note. I hope I was not out of line by giving the scripture, and offering the suggestions I did. My wife and I continue to lift you up to the Lord for your health. I am in P.T. and this has been the most benifical thing that has happened! I walk without pain! There is likely no reason to replace the knee at this time. Praise the Lord!!!!! I did look at the Living Bible yesterday. Brother you were correct, it is a worthy translation. I am very suprised, and pleased. Thank you for sharing your opinion. Have a blessed day! justme |

6 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | FTimA | 64795
Who is it that you refer to when you say "denominational members have such a narrow view"? Who was it that said "narrow is the way"? A secular definition of denomination is "A large group of religious congregations united under a common faith and name and organized under a single administrative and legal hierarchy." According to this definition, yes, the church of Christ is a denomination, but again, it is the only one mentioned in the bible. Whether it be church of God, church of the saints, church of Christ, church of Ephesus, Galatia, Thessalonica, etc, etc. These are all the same and are patterned after Christ's teaching, from God. I am reminded of Paul's exhortation to the Corinthian's... 1 Cor 1:10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ." 13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? We could just as well put in I am of Campbell, I am of Calvin, I am of Luther, I am of Pope John, but what does Paul say? Is CHRIST divided? |

7 | "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED"!!! | Matt 22:37 | justme | 64821
Hank: Christ is impossible to divide. Believers can and do divide, into their own belief systems of theology. I have no problems with having denominations, having been in four different denominations myself. I appreciate the way the Southern Baptist Denomation sends out their missionaries with full support and not having to beg for funding. I disliked re-baptizing believers that were not baptized as Sourthern Baptist. When I was serving a Consertive Baptist Association church, there were some wonderful efforts they made that I saw that the others did not. They have as great interest in summer camps for youth, and make them very affordable, and often paid the kids way. American Baptist are more social issues oriented, and have a higher education requirement of their clergy. Some churches have closed communion, which I respect, but do not agree with. These are no reasons to be deviceive with one another. I am think you get the point I am trying to make. These are small issues, and for many, this still does not stop fellowship. However, when anyone says that they are the only complete absolute Chruch of Christ, and unless you are in this group then you are lost; is this not dividing Christ in the ultimate negative way? This was to whom I am refering to "denomiation members have such a narrow view". I was attempting not to mention a specfic denomination. I was under the impression we were not to mention negative remarks about specfic named denomination. When later I saw that the Church of Christ was named, I perhaps should have been more specfic. My statement was too broad, and left my remark open to misunderstanding. I see your point and thank you for asking me to justify my position. I refer often to Galations 5:6 at the end where it says "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." That certianly means, at least for me, in my mind and words, that the CHURCH OF CHRIST far exceeds any denomination or non-denomination group that calls then self whatever they so choose, as long as they are genuine believers in Jesus Christ. Should I have offend you, or anyone else please except my apology. I am sure as my wife says I must have had a "senior moment". I enjoy the Forum and I am feel now, I was rather insensitive, that I may have sent the wrong meaning of the message I was trying convay. I thank you for taking the time to invest your wisdom in me. God bless you Hank. justme |
