1 | What is your understanding of the H.S.? | Matt 22:37 | Reformer Joe | 64182
First of all, the Holy Spirit is a "He," not an "it." The Holy Spirit is God, the third Person of the Trinity. "We believe and confess also that the Holy Spirit proceeds eternally from the Father and the Son-- neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but only proceeding from the two of them. In regard to order, he is the third person of the Trinity-- of one and the same essence, and majesty, and glory, with the Father and the Son. "He is true and eternal God, as the Holy Scriptures teach us." (Belgic Confession, Article 11) "Justifying faith is a saving grace, wrought in the heart of a sinner BY THE SPIRIT and Word of God, whereby he, being convinced of his sin and misery, and of the disability in himself and all other creatures to recover him out of his lost condition, not only assenteth to the truth of the promise of the gospel, but receiveth and resteth upon Christ and his righteousness, therein held forth, for pardon of sin, and for the accepting and accounting of his person righteous in the sight of God for salvation." (Westminster Larger Catechism, Answer #72). --Joe! |

2 | What is your understanding of the H.S.? | Matt 22:37 | FTimA | 64188
Being a "spirit" I doubt that it possesses any gender. I understand the Holy Trinity. As for the rest of your note, could you please put it in layman's terms? I believe I understand this "catechism" to say that "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Heb 11:1).
3 | What is your understanding of the H.S.? | Matt 22:37 | Reformer Joe | 64199
God the Father is "spirit," too (John 4:24). Do you refer to God as "It"? The Holy Spirit applies the salvation won by Jesus Christ according to the Father's will by doing the following things: 1. He convinces the sinner of his sinfulness and of his being an object of the Father's justice and wrath 2. He convinces the sinner of his helplessness to save himself 3. He causes the sinner to believe the gospel of grace and to trust in Christ's sinless life and substitutionary death as complete payment for his sins and the basis for him being justified (declared righteous) before God the Father. --Joe! |

4 | What is your understanding of the H.S.? | Matt 22:37 | FTimA | 64201
If I was in an objective discussion, possibly. I accept the male gender being applied to the Holy Trinity but it wasn't necessary to do so in my earlier post. Would you please substantiate your list of Holy Spirit attributes with some scripture?
5 | What is your understanding of the H.S.? | Matt 22:37 | Reformer Joe | 64287
"I accept the male gender being applied to the Holy Trinity but it wasn't necessary to do so in my earlier post." It is a good and proper thing to do, and it also helps remind us that when we are speaking of the Holy Spirit, we are speaking of God Himself, a being active in accomplishing the Father's will, and not some "substance." You wrote: "Would you please substantiate your list of Holy Spirit attributes with some scripture?" The largest treatments of the Spirit's work are John 14, John 16, and Romans 8. Ephesians 1:13 ff. describes the Spirit's role in our justification, and Galatians 5:16 ff. describes the role of the Spirit in the sanctification of the believer, and 1 Thessalonians 1:5 tells us that conversion comes by the word and Spirit of God. Lydia in Acts 16 had her heart "opened" by the Lord to pay attention to what Paul said. Again, it wasn't her "clever realization" of the truth, but the work of God the Holy Spirit in her heart. People really need to be careful not to give themselves too much credit for becoming Christians... --Joe! |
