1 | How do we preach the Gospel? | 1 John 2:2 | GeorJoy | 100601 | ||
Ed, please forgive my interjection. Perhaps I have misunderstood, but I would have to say that rather than listening to some "Apologist," and those he “apologizes to,” (their garbage will only cloud your mind,) one (through the Spirit,)should "Listen to THE word," for it is the only defense. The Word needs no “Apologist.” How can anyone “defend the Word.” The Word is OUR defense. We “so called” Christians are who need an “Apologist.” And an Apologist, we have, but we are often too STUPID to accept His defense. Rather we try defending ourselves. Did you ever hear the saying that “the one who defends himself has a fool for a client?” 2Ti 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2Ti 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Why Dear Lord, can our feeble, flesh ladened minds not comprehend the “simplicity” of Your word!? George |

Hi, George; It is surprising to find one who has such a low regard for apologetics practicing it: "Did you ever hear the saying that 'the one who defends himself has a fool for a client?'". That's not in the Bible, is it? Yet you quoted it in defense of the Bible. That's apologetics. But you're in good company; Paul was quite an apologist himself. In the Areopagus, he used the beliefs and artifacts of the culture he was in to show the truth of Scripture. (Acts 2:16-34) Ravi Zacharias, Josh McDowell, and C. S. Lewis have done exactly the same thing. It's hardly "garbage". Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones (whose pathway to acceptance of the Gospel was cleared by C. S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity") |

It is not that I have a low regard for the practice... I know that anyone who defends anything is considered an apologist. I would prefer to coin the word "explainist;" One who explains. For I make NO appologies for the Word, or the Divinity thereof. I will however gladly devote my life to its explination, for those less given to understanding and acceptance. I simply do not like the word, APOLOGIST. It implys, "to apologize for." Yet it is defined as follows 1 : systematic argumentative discourse in defense (as of a doctrine) 2 : a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity. Greetings George! I understand that the word 'apologitic' sounds like 'apology'. However, it is a Biblical word. Three uses in particular refer to the Gospel. Twice (Phil. 1:7 and 1:16) Paul uses the word 'apologia' to refer to his preaching of the Gospel. Then, Peter gives us this command in 1 Peter 3:15: "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect," Here, the phrase 'to give an answer' is a translation of 'apologia'. So, all Christians are commanded to be apologists of the Gospel. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
