NASB | 1 John 2:2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 2:2 And He [that same Jesus] is the propitiation for our sins [the atoning sacrifice that holds back the wrath of God that would otherwise be directed at us because of our sinful nature--our worldliness, our lifestyle]; and not for ours alone, but also for [the sins of all believers throughout] the whole world. |
Subject: The Love of God |
Bible Note: Greetings All! It is difficult to comprehend the awesome nature of God. How can someone be all powerful? How can someone be all present, or all knowing? But, as great as His physical attributes are, it is His love that confounds us the most. John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Rom. 5:8 - "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." 1 John 4:10 - "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." 1 John 2:2 - "He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world." It is difficult for us to imagine a love so great that it extends to every single person - a love that was proven on Calvary. Denney writes: "The New Testament knows nothing of an incarnation which can be defined apart from its relation to atonement; it is to put away sin and to destroy the works of the devil that even in the evangelist of the Incarnation the Son of God is made manifest. It is not in His being here, but in His being here as a propitiation for the sins of the world that the love of God is revealed. Not Bethlehem, but Calvary is the focus of revelation, and any construction of Christianity which ignores or denies this distorts Christianity by putting it out of focus." (The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation, p. 138f). Oh how deep and wonderful is His love! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
