1 | Is God omnipotent? | John 3:16 | Morant61 | 89394 | ||
Greetings John! It never ceases to amaze me my friend that verses never actually mean what they say! ;-) Did God really intend for His Word to be this complicated to understand? 'All' doesn't mean 'all', 'anyone' doesn't really mean 'anyone', and now 'saved' doesn't really mean 'saved'! Your proposition has been that regeneration precedes faith, even though not one verse actually says this. However, I pointed out that Acts 16:31 says 'believe' and then you will be saved. Now, unless you are prepared to argue that a regenerated person is not saved, then Acts 16:31 disagrees with your proposition. It doesn't matter that it is narrative. Paul is responding to a very direct question, 'What must I do to be saved?'. Therefore, we know that the context is germane to the discussion. But, this isn't even the only passage with indicates that the elements of salvation follow faith. Here are some of the verses I posted the other day: *********************************** So, let's look at what Scripture actually says about faith: Gal. 2:16 - "know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified." Does this verse say that we are justfied prior to or after faith? Gal. 3:26 - "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus," Does this verse say that we become sons of God prior to or after faith? Gal. 3:2 - "I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard?" Does this verse say that we received the Spirit before or after believing? Rom. 3:26 - "he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus" Does this verse say that we are justified before or after faith? Rom. 3:22 - "This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference," Does righteousness come before or after faith? John 20:31 - "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." Do we receive life before or after believing? Acts 16:31 - "They replied, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.'" Are we saved and then believe, or do we believe and are then saved? Eph. 1:13 - "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit," Are we sealed prior to or after believing? All of these verses specifically mention either salvation or elements of salvation. And, all of these verses specifically say that these things come after faith. ************************************ Can a regenerate man be unsaved, unjustified, not a Son of God, unsealed, and without the Holy Spirit? All of these things are said to take place after faith. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dear Tim, Salvation is by grace alone. Faith is the means by which salvation is accomplished. We are saved by grace through faith. Paul who expressed this doctrine also said of the gentiles that "remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. Eph 2:12 Excluded! Without God! No hope! Is Paul exagerating the condition of these gentile believers prior to their new-birth in Christ? Of course not. He was merely giving an accurate assesment of the condition in which fallen man exists. But Paul, your mistaken a young Ephesian cries, we always have had the ability to believe! No, I'm sure that they knew Paul was telling it like it is and like it remains up until this very day. In order to defend free-will theology, one must give hope to those who never have heard the gospel. They must invent another way to God, other than faith in Christ as proclaimed in the gospel. We are told that God gives everyone an opportunity to choose or reject Christ. Therefore, we must believe that the message is (somehow or other) provided through means other than the God's written Word being preached by His church. Maybe God speaks to their hearts inwardly? Maybe they are shown through the created order? Maybe, maybe, maybe...? Well, maybe, their right! OK. But where is the evidence from Scripture or from nature of faith in Christ florishing in the remote regions of the Earth? God did speak in divers ways, but for the past 2,000 years He has spoken tous through His Son. Prior to Christ we read in Scripture of relatively few people who were converted and they were those who had contact with the Jews. So, I believe the burden of proof rests with those who argue against God's choosing alone being the determining factor in salvation. Wheres the beef? John |

Greetings John! You said all of that, but did not address even one verse that I cited! :-( Where's the beef? I have cited it over and over again, but you constantly tell me that the words of Scripture don't actually mean what they say. Allow me to narrow the long list of Scriptures down to simply one. You claim that Eph. 2:1-12 is an indication that believer must be regenerated before they can believe, even though none of these verses actually say that anywhere. However, read what John 20:31 actually says, John 20:31 - "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." So, when does this new life come - before or after faith? According to this verse, it comes after believing. I love you my brother, but I am done with this debate. Every claim I have made, I have provided Scripture which explictly says what I said. Yet, each time, I am told that it 'can't' really mean what it says. How does one end a debate like that? I really don't see any point in continuing. It doesn't matter what the Scriptures I show you actually say, if they disagree with the theological assumptions you have adopted, they will be ignored. And now, it has even reached the point where Paul's response to 'what must I do to be saved?' isn't even talking about salvation. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

I understand Tim, Reading your post I felt as if it was one I had sent to you :-) But I must admit to being over-bearing by ignoring your previous post and rushing off my reply. If you can take it, I will seek to address your points as best as I am able. John John |

Greetings John! I would appreciate it! By the way, I never did ask, 'How old are your grandkids?' Mine just turned 9 months, and she is already getting ready to walk. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, Thanks for asking! My grand-daughters are 10 and 1 years old, and my grandson is 8 years old. It is a blessing that the oldest two attend a sound christian school and to see them in church on Sunday. My youngest lives in N. California and my daughter takes her to church as well. Unfortunately, the little one's way of praising God seems to be by screaming at the top of her lungs! Your Brother John |
