Bible Note: Hi, Mark - Matthew 8:17 applies the prophecy of Isaiah 53:4 to Jesus' earthly healing ministry. 1 Peter 2:24 confirms that the prophecy of Isaiah 53:5 pertains to Christ's atonement for sin on the cross. ..... Faith healers often use Matthew 8:17 to show that healing in is in the atonement, and that therefore physical healing is something that the believer can claim by faith. But this is not so. Here Matthew writing by inspiration of the Spirit of God applies the prophecy to our Savior's earthly healing ministry and not to His work on the cross. In John 3:16 and in numerous other passages of Scripture we have God's promise of salvation (spiritual healing) to all who believe in Christ, made possible by His finished work (atonement) on the cross. In no place in Scripture does God promise physical healing to all who believe. This is not to say that God cannot or will not heal physical ailments. He can and He does according to His will, but, unlike salvation (spiritual healing), He does not promise physcial healing to everyone who believes. ...... Here I have been speaking only of our present physical bodies on this earth, Mark. For the redeemed, at the resurrection the soul and body will be reunited to be glorified forever with our Lord, nevermore to be ravaged by sin's consequences. [1 Cor. 15:35-44, 50-54; Phil. 3:21] ..... Yours was an excellent question, by the way. --Hank |
