Bible Note: Hi,Lissa - Actually the passage is found in Matthew 17:20, not 11:23, and in context it actually has more to do with Jesus' disciples' unbelief than about moving mountains. Reading down from Matthew 17:16, we find a man approaching Jesus with a plea for the healing of his son. He tells Jesus that he brought his son to His disciples who were unable to cure him. Jesus cured the man's son at once. Then Jesus' disciples approached Him privately and inquired, "Why could we not drive it [the demon who possessed the man's son] out? Jesus' answer was, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible." What was Jesus' message? Was he teaching His disciples how to perform stunts, such as moving mountains, for their own amusement or selfish aggrandizement so they could flaunt their wealth, power, and prestige at His expense? God forbid! Faith must be based on God's will and His commands. Expecting to perform some spectacular stunt in order to gratify a personal whim is not faith but presumption. ..... Was He teaching them to name it and claim it? Certainly not! He was, in fact, rebuking them for their puny faith (littleness of faith) and teaching them by the graphic and earthy example of moving mountains how marvelously boundless faith in Him can be. Moreover, Jesus never teaches to have faith in faith. He always teaches to have faith in Him. --Hank |
