Hi Hank and Brad, This is from my previous post on this topic: I know that healing comes at God's discretion, not by our will, only as it serves His purposes. We will all be healed, perhaps now, and perhaps in the resurrection. I know that Paul said somewhere that the Holy Spirit had prevented him from a certain trip. Elsewhere we read that he couldn't make that trip because he was sick. I especially like your quote from Dr. Rhodes 'Am I saying we shouldn't pray for healing? No, not at all. I'm just saying that after we've asked for healing, we need to submit to God's sovereign will. He may have a purpose in allowing our illness.' With that said. . . Does not Matthew 8:17 let us know that Isaiah 53 is not only refering to spiritual healing, but also physical healing? Shoud we completely spiritualize the Isaiah 53 passage? Mt 8:15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. 16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. What are your thoughts regarding how Matt 8:18 bears on this topic? Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi, Mark - Matthew 8:17 applies the prophecy of Isaiah 53:4 to Jesus' earthly healing ministry. 1 Peter 2:24 confirms that the prophecy of Isaiah 53:5 pertains to Christ's atonement for sin on the cross. ..... Faith healers often use Matthew 8:17 to show that healing in is in the atonement, and that therefore physical healing is something that the believer can claim by faith. But this is not so. Here Matthew writing by inspiration of the Spirit of God applies the prophecy to our Savior's earthly healing ministry and not to His work on the cross. In John 3:16 and in numerous other passages of Scripture we have God's promise of salvation (spiritual healing) to all who believe in Christ, made possible by His finished work (atonement) on the cross. In no place in Scripture does God promise physical healing to all who believe. This is not to say that God cannot or will not heal physical ailments. He can and He does according to His will, but, unlike salvation (spiritual healing), He does not promise physcial healing to everyone who believes. ...... Here I have been speaking only of our present physical bodies on this earth, Mark. For the redeemed, at the resurrection the soul and body will be reunited to be glorified forever with our Lord, nevermore to be ravaged by sin's consequences. [1 Cor. 15:35-44, 50-54; Phil. 3:21] ..... Yours was an excellent question, by the way. --Hank | ||||||
