Hank, My view is that Jesus' atoning death was complete and adequate for redeeming the whole person--spirit, soul, and body. As sin and sickness have become the twin giants designed by Satan to destroy us, so forgiveness and healing are joined as twin blessings designed by God to redeem us and make us whole (Ps. 103:3; Jas. 5:14-16). The believer should press on in humility and faith to possess the full provision of Christ's atonement, including the healing of the body. I would be grateful to know which statements you feel are incongruous and conflicting statements that I have posted regarding the relationship between spiritual healing and physical healing. Thank you. Janae. |

Janae - Psalm 103:3 is a parallelism. "Diseases" refers to spiritual afflictions, parallel with iniquities. It says nothing about Jesus' atoning death being for our physcial afflictions and therefore does not prove your case. James 5:14-16 is about the leaders of the church praying for the sick among their flock. And, again, it says nothing about Jesus' atoning death being for our physical afflications and therefore does not prove your case. I cannot emphasize enough that the gospel message is not that Christ died to make us physically whole. He died on the cross for our sins, our Sins, our SINS! It is God's power for our SALVATION from SIN, not our escape from the thorns of the flesh! Look at what Paul said in Romans 1:16: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for SALVATION [he does not say for physical healing] to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." Nowhere in Scripture does it suggest that salvation from sin and healing from physcial ailments are tied together in a neat package deal. Other users on this thread -- Kalos, DocTrinesograce, CDBJ, EdB -- have responded to you with sound biblical teaching. You seem only to want to continue to argue your views in spite of their efforts to show you what Scripture actually teaches. I see no need to continue to argue these points with you, Janae. I will not compromise on what the Bible teaches in order to placate you. ....... For the life of me I can't understand why there is so much emphasis being placed on physical healing these days and so little on the preaching of the gospel of Christ. The message of the gospel is about saving souls from eternal hell not healing temporal bodies. Instead of healing circuses that Benny Hinn and those of his stripe conduct, the world needs genuine gospel messages such as those that Apostles Paul and Peter, and Charles Spurgeon and Jonathan Edwards preached! People need to be told that they are on their way to hell if they do not believe in Christ, not that they will be physcially healed if they do. --Hank

Dear Hank, You are right about preaching of the gospel being the most important message in the Word of God. All I am saying is that healing is also available through Christ's atoning blood, and you can choose to believe it or not. I choose to believe it. I want all that God has for me. Just because I don't interpret the Word of God in the same manner as you do, does not mean that I am wrong and you are right. Sin and death are consequences of the fall, but God's provision in redemption is as extensive as the consequences of the fall. For Sin, God provides forgiveness; for death, God provides eternal and resurrection life; and for sickness, God provides healing. If you cannot see that Psalm 103:3 expresses that, I cannot make you see it. Clearly, I am from a different denomination and we should have respect for each others' beliefs. Is this a Baptist only board? If you do not want me to post on this board due to our differences, then so be it. I have no problem with that. That is fine. I do not put you down for that. Had God brought me to a Baptist Church when I was saved, I would be believing much the same as you, but he did not. He brought me to the Assembly of God Church, where the gifts of the spirit are alive and thriving, and people worship God in a different manner than what you are used to. That is okay. But you should respect my beliefs, also. We will find out who is right when we reach heaven, where there are no denominational differences. In the meantime, we are commanded to love one another--especially the brethren. Love in Christ, Janae. |

Janae, thanks for your candid response. ..... No, this is not a Baptist Forum. ..... No, you should not feel unwelcome at this Forum or fear that you will be asked to leave because you are a member of the Assembly of God denomination. Two of my closes and dearest friends on this Forum are members of the AG. ...... A personal note: I have not always been a Baptist. I was a Presbyterian for some 40 years. I grew up in a Church of Christ congregation, and it was while attending that denomination that I became a follower of Christ at age 14. (I'm 69 years old now). God did not lead me to the denomination called the Church of Christ; He lead me to Christ! I became a Christian while attending the Church of Christ, remained a Christian when I attended the Presbyterian Church, and now having cast my lot with the Southern Baptist Convention, I remain a Christian still. ...... My point is that we are Christian because of our belief in Christ as our Savior and Lord, not because of membership in a denomination. My name being on the membership role of First Baptist Church of my home town will not justify me before the Holy God. I am saved (justified) by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ. ...... My dear Janae, if Jesus is Lord of your life, and I have every reason to believe He is, you are as much my sister in Christ as a member of the Assembly of God as you would be if you were a member of the First Baptist Church in your home town -- and sang in the choir! :-) ....... I don't speak in tongues; I don't hold to the belief that physical healing is in the atonement, though I believe in divine healing in accordance with the will of God; I do hold to the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints (also called the eternal security of the believer and sometimes referred to as "once saved, always saved"); I do not hold to the doctrine of baptismal regeneration. My views on these and other issues have modified somewhat over the years as I have tried to dig deeper into God's word, but this has not caused me to be more of a Christian or less of one, or more saved or less saved! But this experience of modifying my views on certain topics as I came to know more about God's word has served to teach me humility, because I have come to recognize that my interpretations of Scripture have not always been correct in every respect, though at the time I thought they were. So it is that none of us is infallible. None of us knows so much about God's word that there is no room left to know more. None of us has reached a point of holiness and sanctification at which we can honestly say we've reached our zenith. And the Bible affords ample room in which to grow. As Spurgeon observed, when we dig deeply into the Scriptures, we discover newer and deeper depths, and beneath them, deeper depths still. ..... Perhaps all on this Forum have heard of "death-bed" conversions, and I have no doubt that this has occurred. We have only to consider the thief on the cross. But how much they are missing who do not surrender to Christ when they are young! I'm so thankful that God saved my soul when I was a lad of 14. This sacred journey with Christ has filled my life with peace and joy for 55 years, and words fail me to tell how precious this journey has been to me and grows more precious with each passing day. --Hank
