Dear Doc, Take a look at Matthew 9:1-8, please: 1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men. I did not take Isaiah 53:5 out of context. This healing refers to salvation with all its benefits, spiritual and physical. Sickness and disease are the result of the fall and Satan's activity in the world. "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil." (I John 3:8) Christ gave gifts of healing to His church (I Cor. 12:9) and commanded His followers to heal the sick as part of their proclamation of the kingdom of God (Luke 9:1-2,6; 10:1, 8-9,19). "Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases." Signs following those who believe: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." (Mark 16:17-18). The Scriptures clearly teach that it is the desire of Christ for His followers to perform miraculous deeds as they announce the gospel of the kingdom of God. These signs, performed by true disciples, confirm that the gospel message is genuine, that the kingdom of God has come to earth in power, and that the living and risen Jesus is present with His people and working through them. BUT IT IS THROUGH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT THESE MIRACLES ARE PERFORMED. Love in Christ Jesus, Janae |

If physical healing is part of the gospel, then why do Christians ultimately die? Every death is a consequence of the body's failure to be healed.

The problem of sickness and disease is intertwined with the problem of sin and death--i.e., the consequences of the fall. Whereas medical science views the causes of sickness and disease in physiological or psychosomatic terms, the Bible presents spiritual causes as the underlying or basic problem. These are twofold (a) sin, which has affected our spiritual and physical makeup (John 5:5, 14), and (b) Satan (Acts 10:38; cf. Mark 9:17, 20, 25; Luke 13-11; Acts 9:11-12). |

For a moment there I thought I was reading a quotation from Mary Baker Eddy's "Science and Health With a Key to the Scriptures." --Hank

Wouldn't know; haven't read it. But, you should mind your manners. I don't put down your beliefs, and you shouldn't put down mine. I thought we were to exchange ideas, not be dogmatic on this board. Some people take all the fun out of discussing the Word of God. I hope you are not one of them. Janae. |

"What does this text say to us, anyway?" [In attaching my Note to this thread, I am by no means implying that anyone participating in this discussion has done what the Note talks about. This is something for all of US (me, too) to beware of. Grace to you! --Kalos] - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Avoid adlibbing in Bible interpretation. Avoid free wheeling in Bible interpretation." - - - - - - - - - - - - - 'Avoid superficial interpretation...avoid superficial interpretation. One of the common problems in interpreting the Bible is this little phrase, "This verse means to me...." so forth and so forth and so forth. Let me tell you something. It doesn't matter what it means to you, the question is what would it mean if you didn't live? What would it mean if you didn't exist? What does it mean period is the issue, not what does it mean to you. 'Sometimes you'll hear people get together and supposedly have a Bible study which is little more than a pooling of ignorance. People say, "Well, I look at this verse and I feel this verse is saying..." It doesn't matter what you feel. That has nothing to do with it. It's not a matter of how you feel about the verse, it's not a matter of what you think it means to you. Avoid adlibbing in Bible interpretation. Avoid free wheeling in Bible interpretation. Haphazard handling of God's Word. 'We all want to acknowledge the priesthood of the believer...yes, we all want to acknowledge that we have anointing from God, the Spirit of God who dwells within us and the Spirit of God who dwells within us is the teacher who teaches us. We all want to acknowledge that. But that is not justification for flippancy dealing with Scripture. That's why in 1 Timothy 5:17 it says, "The elders who work hard in the Scripture are worthy of double honor." It is hard work. 'Avoid superficial interpretation. Avoid "this means to me." That is not a statement that should preface any interpretation of Scripture. The question is, what does it mean if you don't exist? What did it mean before you were born? And what will it mean after you're dead? What does it mean to people who will never meet you? What does it mean period, is the issue' (www.gty.org). |
