Janae, Welcome to the Forum and good to hear from you. I would have to echo Hanks' thoughts on this matter. I think in considering your statement that "my view is that Jesus' atoning death was complete and adequate for redeeming the whole person--spirit, soul, and body", historical context should be weighed. Is. 53:5 has never been interpreted as physical healing until relatively recent times! The majority of classical commentaries render the understanding as spiritual! It is spiritual healing that we need- far beyond the physical- for we shall ALL die eventually! I don't see the context of either Psalm 103:3 or James 5:14-16 as having to do with salvation and it's inherent blessings. We need to consider the whole of the teaching of scripture before we jump to conclusions such as "God always heals", or "His death was intended to provide physical healing", etc. I don't believe scripture warrants this. Read Hebrews 11:36-38 and tell me that God always wants us healed! Note verse 39 :"And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised". By faith some lived and some died horrible deaths. Did God neglect to heal them, or was there perhaps another, more noble purpose He had in mind? I think there was. The error of much of todays' teaching is that God wants us healthy, wealthy and wise! While we may receive such blessings they're not a guarantee. (See Job. 1:9) If I may offer you some advice: We all come to our study of the Word with certain presuppositions. Part of learning and truly desiring to seek Him is to set aside our presuppositions and be open to input and insight from other, more mature believers! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Dear BradK: With all due respect, I have not stated that God wants to heal us all the time--you put those words into my mouth. I stated that God's healing is AVAILABLE through his atoning death on the cross. Just because a certain belief is recent, does that make it wrong? The fall of Adam into sin led the human race into the universal experience of sin, sickness, and death. In Psalm 103:3, the psalmist lists God's blessings for His people: forgiveness of our sins, healing for our diseases, and the gifts of redemption and eternal life. Forgiveness is the first and most important gift we can receive from God. Through it we are restored to God and redeemed from destruction (verse 4). Healing of diseases that come to us because of sin and Satan is likewise part of the salvation that God makes available to his people (James 5:15-16). In James 5:15-16, James is speaking of physical sickness. We may deal with illness by sending for the elders or leaders of the church. (1) It is the duty of pastors and elders to pray for the sick and to anoint them with oil. The responsibility to pray the prayer of faith is on them, not on the sick person. The New Testament places the major burden for healing on the church and its leaders. (2) The oil probably represents the healing power of the Holy Spirit and was used as an aid to faith. (Mark 6:13) (3) It is prayer that James emphasizes as most important. Effective prayer must be offered in faith if the sick are to be healed. The Lord will give faith according to His will. (4) People may or may not always be healed; nevertheless. God promises to be with all those who cry unto Him in fervent prayer. In James 5:16, is an important reason why healing is often lacking in the Christian community. Sin must be confessed to others, and fervent prayer for one another be made unto God. Sin in the church hinders the prayers of believers and blocks the healing power of God from being manifested in the congregation. I know for a fact that the above is true, because I have been prayed for by the elders of the church, and miraculously healed by God. I am speaking not only from the reading of God's Word, but also from a personal experience with the Lord. God's Word is true, and everything else is subject to change by that Word. Are you saying that divine healing is not a part of Christ's atoning death? If so, what is your reason for this belief? Janae |
