Hi Zach, Will you tell me, what is free will, or at least, what do you mean when you use the term free will? We debate this topic a lot in the forum. Someone has defined it as, "the ability to chose not to sin." I think that we don't have a clear notion of what we're talking about, do you? Peace, Lionstrong |

Greetings Lionstrong! There are many definitions of free will. My understanding is simply this: When God says "Repent", I can either obey or disobey! The choice is mine. I may be influenced by my evioroment, by my peers, by my family, by God. But, the choice is mine! The situation with my daughter is a perfect example. She was raised in a Christian home. She has parents who love her dearly. But, she has chosen a different course in her life. Is she absolutely free? No! She can't avoid the consequences of her decisions. She can't change the past. But, she can choose - rightly or wrongly - and live with the consequences. In the same way, God lays out His commands and warnings. We can obey or disobey - and then live with the consequences. Greetings Tim! You write: "I may be influenced by my evioroment, by my peers, by my family, by God. But, the choice is mine!" When you say, "the choice is mine," do you mean that you are totally free to choose against any those influences? If not you are not free to choose against the influences; how, then, is the choice free? Peace, Lionstrong |

Greetings Lionstrong! When it comes to moral choices, yes I am free to choose against these influences. For instance, my father was an extremely jealous person. I saw the way he treated my mother. I had two choices. I could grow up to be like my father, or I could choose a different path. I choose a different path. Growing up, I had many peers who did drugs and alcohol. I choose not to use those things. Now, I don't believe in what some call abosolute freedom. There are limiting factors. For instance, I can't choose to be taller than I am. I can't choose my race. I can't choose to eliminate hell. But, within those sorts of constraints, I am free to make moral decisions. By the way, you've been putting all of the pressure on others! :-) How do you define man's will? Is he free or not? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
