Bible Question:
Hi Zach, Will you tell me, what is free will, or at least, what do you mean when you use the term free will? We debate this topic a lot in the forum. Someone has defined it as, "the ability to chose not to sin." I think that we don't have a clear notion of what we're talking about, do you? Peace, Lionstrong |
Bible Answer: Greetings Lionstrong! There are many definitions of free will. My understanding is simply this: When God says "Repent", I can either obey or disobey! The choice is mine. I may be influenced by my evioroment, by my peers, by my family, by God. But, the choice is mine! The situation with my daughter is a perfect example. She was raised in a Christian home. She has parents who love her dearly. But, she has chosen a different course in her life. Is she absolutely free? No! She can't avoid the consequences of her decisions. She can't change the past. But, she can choose - rightly or wrongly - and live with the consequences. In the same way, God lays out His commands and warnings. We can obey or disobey - and then live with the consequences.
