Bible Note: inmyheart: Joe was using irony in the segment of his post that you cited: "Maybe Paul didn't instruct him in the faith well enough (Philippians 2:25-27)." Irony is a literary device in which what is being said is opposite from the meaning intended. It is used for effect. Some of the Bible writers used irony, Shakespeare used irony, and almost all discerning writers and speakers have used it at one time or another. I read that what Joe is really saying is that he has confidence that the apostle Paul did indeed thoroughly instruct Epaphroditus in the faith. Knowing Joe and reading him in context leads me to no other conclusion. Should I be wrong, I think Joe will be willing to correct my error of judgment. --Hank |
