Bible Note: Rferg, in your note to Tim, you said, "Without baptism we don't receive the Holy Spirit." The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit comes into the life of the believer at the point of regeneration. This indwelling of the Holy Spirit is tantamount to saying that the believer is the recipient of the baptism of the Holy Spirit [1 Cor. 12:13]. Spirit baptism is a thing separate and apart from water baptism (immersion). The former comes at the point of regeneration; the latter comes afterward, as an act of obedience to God's command, but this immersion in water in the name of Jesus Christ [Acts 2:38] or the Trinity [Matt.28:19] neither saves nor contributes to salvation in any way. Only faith is essential to salvation [John 3:36]; baptism is essential to obedience [Matt.28:19]. --Hank |
