CDBJ....ROFL ! It's good to see a bit of humor on the forum now and then. Well, we can hope that your correspondent doesn't take you literally about Mark 16:18 :-) There actually was a church -- at least they called themselves a church -- whose members practiced snake handling. It was years ago -- I was just a boy -- in a little community called Dolly Pond located a few miles outside of Chattanooga, TN where I was born. The little country church was a popular place to go when they carried on a snake handling exhibition. I offered to take my girlfriend to see the snake handlers one time, figuring it would be a cheaper date than a movie and popcorn and likely more exciting, but she didn't think much of the idea. Girls were rather squeamish back in those days. She thought I was weird for even suggesting to take her to a snake-handling service and we broke up shortly after that. I never cared too much for her either. --Hank | ||||||

There are many such churches in West Virginia that still handle snakes. Every so often someone gets bit with disastrous results. Even with all this you never hear of anyone drinking a nice ice-cold tall glass of strychnine or a big frosted mug of cyanide. Now if those that think Mark 16:18 is for us today you would think that they would be imbibing in the fine acts of proper libation by downing a few of these faith testers! Test results. 2 Cor. 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. |

Mark 16:18 does not prescribe snake handling or poison drinking -- it merely says that this will happen. JESUS also said "On the other hand, it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.' " Matt 4:7 (Jesus' answer to Satan regarding testing and proof of the Father's will) |
