1 | What are the "works of God"? | Rom 6:4 | kalos | 56822
You said "Second they would have to demonstrate or prove their belief by their actions (i.e observance of the Mosaical Law and teaching)." Observing the Mosaic Law first as a step toward salvation never was part of the plan of salvation. This is the oldest and most obvious heresy in the book -- that of mixing law and grace. The Apostle Paul, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, dealt with this error more than 1900 years ago in the epistle to the Galatians. ************* While I will gladly respond to your posts, this thread, When does newness of life start? (?) The Bible is Right Sat 07/27/02, 12:12am, has already run way too long. What I suggest is that if there are subtopics to be discussed, then another thread be started. This is what I *suggest*. What I will *do* is not post any more replies to the current thread. |

2 | What are the "works of God"? | Rom 6:4 | Aspiring Overseer | 56866
For the record, the passage you are attacking deals with the requirements under the Mosiacal Covenant. Are you saying that works were not required there, as well? Surely, you would agree that the Apostle Paul was one of the most knowledgeable and active Jews of the day. He did not reach his level of experience without effort.
3 | What are the "works of God"? | Rom 6:4 | kalos | 56877
"The observance of the Law has nothing to do with justification." What part of this do you not understand? NASB Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. AMPLIFIED Romans 3:28 For we hold that a man is justified and made upright by faith independent of and distinctly apart from good deeds (works of the Law). [The observance of the Law has nothing to do with justification.] For the record, the fundamental Bible doctrine you are attacking is that we are saved by Grace alone through Faith alone in Christ alone. If anyone wants to put himself under a system of works-righteousness, he will find that the doors to the Roman Catholic church are wide open. You accuse me of attacking a passage of Scripture. Lying and making personal attacks against me will not prove your argument. I have never "attacked" a passage of Scripture. What I challenge are your unsound, unfounded, un-scriptural speculative fantasies. Take care that you you do not continue to post personal attacks and submit posts "as an effort to foster divisiveness, ill-will, dissension or other disruptions to this forum". For if you do, you risk losing the privilege of posting to this forum. To quote Hank: "The members of this forum, by and large, come here to study and increase their knowledge and understanding of Scripture. Accordingly, though it may come as a shock to you, they are not remotely interested in reading unsound, unfounded, un-scriptural or extra-scriptural far-out notions of users who offer no credentials and no other viable reasons why they should be allowed to spout off with just any opinion that happens to pop into their heads." |

4 | What are the "works of God"? | Rom 6:4 | Emmaus | 56898
Kalos, "For the record, the fundamental Bible doctrine you are attacking is that we are saved by Grace alone through Faith alone in Christ alone. If anyone wants to put himself under a system of works-righteousness, he will find that the doors to the Roman Catholic church are wide open." For the record, the above statement that the Roman Catholic Church teaches "works-righteousness" is a misrepresentation of Catholic doctrine. The true Catholic teaching on initial justification is easily found in the documents of the Council of Trent from which I quote here: "CHAPTER VIII HOW THE GRATUITOUS JUSTIFICATION OF THE SINNER BY FAITH IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD But when the apostle says that man is justified by faith and freely, these words are to be understood in that sense in which the uninterrupted unanimity of the Catholic Church has held and expressed them, namely, that we are therefore said to be justified by faith, because faith is the beginning of human salvation, the foundation and root of all justification, without which it is impossible to please God and to come to the fellowship of His sons; and we are therefore said to be justified gratuitously, because none of those things that precede justification, whether faith or works, merit the grace of justification. For, if by grace, it is not now by works, otherwise, as the Apostle says, grace is no more grace." Emmaus |

Emmaus: Truly it was not my intention to bash the Roman Catholic Church. And if I have done so, then I apologize to you and to anyone else whom I may have offended. I honestly believed that the Church did teach and promote a system of works-righteousness because this is what I have been taught. It is quite possible that I am mistaken in my understanding. I am certainly not an authority on Roman Catholic doctrine. Thank you for the information you posted. I will have to do further research into this subject. Until I do so, I will remain silent on this issue as regards the Catholic Church. I do not wish to falsely accuse any person or institution. You have always been reasonable and gracious in presenting the doctrines of the Catholic Church. For this I am grateful. I only wish that others who posted here were as reasonable and accurate in what they post as you are. Grace to you, kalos |

Kalos, Thank you. I was surprised to see your post since you are ususally factually accurate. Unfortunately there have especially in the past and still in the present often been caricatures rather than true representations handed down by some teachers on both sides who were themselves taught these same innacurate things.
