1 | Can one who commits suicide be saved? | Ex 20:13 | EdB | 106114
I get real nervous saying you can do thus and such and God will view it as this. Which of us speaks for God? Which of us want to stand for the consequences of our opinions. This is a very dangerous position. You ‘may’ be enabling someone that for no other reason has not committed suicide because of their fear of eternal damnation. I would be real careful what I declared right or wrong in God's eyes that carry such a lasting consequence. The idea that Samson’s committing suicide is comparable to someone jumping out a window is a long stretch. The Philistines were life the long enemies of Israel and they had Israel’s hero in their hands, he took the opportunity to destroy many leading rulers and also give Israel a moral boosting victory. To call this suicide would say that God played the same role as Dr Korvekian (sp) by giving Samson the means to commit suicide, giving his strength back. What Samson did was an act of war much like a soldier diving onto a grenade to save his comrades or a bomber pilot flying a must do one way mission to bomb a target. These aren’t acts of suicide but rather the act of unselfishly giving of your life for the benefit of your friends, loved ones and country. I don’t think we better label Samson as a suicide. Jumping out of a window or slashing your wrist because; you see no hope, no other way, no one cares, your unloved, you want to escape life or want to show the world is far different. My question stands would a Christian ever commit suicide. While I certainly can't speak from experience it seems to me for a person to commit suicide they have had to lost all hope. Can a person without hope really be a Christian? Where is their hope in Christ? A person on the verge of suicide believes there is no one for them, no one cares, no one to love them. Can a Christian knowing the love of Christ feel that way? Many times a person that commits suicide is striking back to get revenge, you'll be sorry type of thing. Is that how a Christian acts? We are to forgive letting God avenge and vindicate us. To me the whole premise of suicide precludes a Christian to begin with. We go back to the question can a saved person loss his salvation? Almost a chicken and egg type thing. The question shouldn’t be can a saved person do thus and such but rather will a saved person ever do thus and such. To me the question is can a truly saved person commit personal suicide? I added the word personal suicide to remove arguments of people giving their life for others. I think the answer to that is no. 2 | Can one who commits suicide be saved? | Ex 20:13 | Pam D | 106231
Ohh Ed - What a terrible mistake I have made. I fervently hope and pray that my comments have not enabled anyone to feel justified in committing suicide. I am so grieved at the thought of that, that I am writing this with tears streaming down my face. Truly, I was hoping to comfort the loved ones left behind. I don't know how I could have been so stupid. Please, please, tell me how to delete my posts on this subject. With immeasurable great sorrow - Pam |

3 | Can one who commits suicide be saved? | Ex 20:13 | EdB | 106245
Pam I did not mean to place any condemnation upon you. God knows your intent. The thread has been restricted which means the unless you know the thread is there and go look for it you will not see it. This thread has not been the first nor I imagine the last that will argue that a person committing suicide will go to heaven. I do not know the answer to question but I do know I have talked to potential suicide victims that have confided in me that the only factor that has kept them from suicide is the fear of eternal damnation. I know there are those that make a point of saying well if asked I have to be truthful and answer by what is in the Bible. We aren't to lie but instead of answering a potentially destructive questions with what we believe is cold hard truth we could see if we can get to the root of the problem. Who knows the motive for the question but before we start okaying destructive behavior we probably should attempt to find out. Maybe a better answer would be, why does such an issue concern you? Or why do you think a Christian would consider suicide? Or do you think it is possible a Christian in right relationship with Jesus would commit suicide? All these questions are valid and all make the person stop and think about the ramifications of their actions. My answer to families that experience suicide is that our God Who is loving, wise and just will deal with the suicide and everything the lead up to it in way that will be loving and just. That if their loved one was saved before the suicide I will say something like, something must have happened mentally that effected their judgement and their ability to make Christian decisions, I’m sure God will take that into consideration. If they are unsaved I will say none of us know what went through their minds and hearts that last instance of life, in that instant they could have called upon Christ. We are to give hope and be encouragers and measure everything we say not to become enablers. Many people are just waiting for our okay to make destructive decisions in life. Pam rest easy and don't worry about this thread. As I said this issue has been discussed many times and exactly the same points have been made. God loves you and so do we be blessed EdB |
