AMPLIFIED 2015 | Exodus 20:13 ¶ "You shall not commit murder (unjustified, deliberate homicide). [Gen 9:6; Ex 21:12, 14, 18] |
Subject: Can one who commits suicide be saved? |
Bible Note: Context: But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "This man casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons." (NASB Matthew 12:24 ) According to the context, basically, blaspheming the Holy Spirit is NOT merely denying the power of the Holy Spirit. Rather this, the unpardonable sin, is ascribing to Satan the works of the Holy Spirit. Context: "Whoever SPEAKS a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever SPEAKS against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. (NASB Matthew 12:32, emphasis added) blaspheme 1 : to SPEAK of or address with irreverence intransitive senses : to UTTER blasphemy (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary) (Emphasis added.) Clearly both the context in which verse 31 appears and the meaning of the word "blaspheme" clarify what Jesus meant. Blasphemy specifically involves speaking or uttering. Thus, I do not take "destroying the living temple of the Holy Spirit" to be blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. It would be a stretch of the meaning of the word blaspheme as well as the meaning of Matt 12:32 to suppose otherwise. (Matthew 12:31 occurs within the context of Matthew 12:32.) |
