1 | Mark 16:16 what does it say? | Bible general Archive 1 | RAVEN | 51020
Tim, You write:What role does 'works' play in our salvation, none in accomplishing our salvation. However, once we are saved, then we will 'work' and be obedient to God's commands - such as baptism. So basically what you are saying is God owes it to us to save us? You said, "once we are saved, then we will 'work". My friend I am not trying to twist your words but you make it sound like before you do anything for the Lord He's going to have to save you first. Friend it never has worked this way and never will. God has given to us all He is going to. The Gospel and a meens to accept it and we have to go to Him and accept it. God doesn't come down from Heaven and pick you, you have to pick God, by repenting, confessing, and being baptized. Only then will the Lord add you to His church. Remember Tim I am not saying that I can acumulte merit badges by doing different works. These works I am speaking of are things that are required. Just as in the Old Testament didn't the High Priest once a year have to offer a sacrifice, once for himself and once for the rest of the people? Could he have just offered one sacrifice for everybody and that be acceptable? No. There are guide lines that God has set forth in His word that we must comply with. Baptism is the culminating act that shows our obedience to God. You cannot expect to be saved without first being baptized. Romans 6 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so WE ALSO SHOULD WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE. This is after we are baptized. 'knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8Now IF WE DIED WITH CHRIST, we believe that we shall also live with Him,' We die with Christ through Baptism, there is no other way. Raven, is this a new version of Catch 22? What are our options? To do good works so God will save us? Or wait for God to save us and then keep the salvation going by doing good works? Neither option, my friend, has the palest support in Scripture. By the way, since so much ado has been made about good works, what are good works anyway? And what connection do our good works have with Christ's atoning work on the cross? If baptism and other good works save, what's the point of Christ's death and resurrection? --Hank

Hello Hank, You write,"what are good works anyway?" Observing the Lords Supper for one. This is work that we are commanded to do.(1 Cor 11:24-25) But some might say that we do this at certain times of the year. Thats not when the first church did it though. It says they did it on the first day of the week. (Acts 2:42) Further more it goes on and says the disciples did it on the first day of the week.(Acts 20:7) Another example is singing. Ephesians 5 19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, Also Colossians 3:16 teaches us to sing with grace in our hearts to the Lord. Again some might say we do that. Yes but do you include mechanical instruments? Some might say that the Old Testament shows instruments being used in worship. But it also says, Amos 6 5Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David; Like I have stated before we are under the New Testament now, and anywhere you look in the New Testament it says to sing, or they sung. Proper worship is a work that must be taken seriously, 1 Timothy 3 15but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And more but for time and space I think you get the picture. You also wrote, "And what connection do our good works have with Christ's atoning work on the cross?" These things that I have listed including baptism show God our reverence for Him as our Almighty and our love for His son who died on the cross for the sins of the world. You write,"If baptism and other good works save, what's the point of Christ's death and resurrection?" 1 John 2 says, The Test of Knowing Christ 1 My little children, these things I write to you, SO THAT YOU "MAY NOT SIN." And "IF" anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2And He Himself is the PROPITIATION for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. We have to have that gateway to enter Heaven and Jesus said John 14 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Raven |
