Subject: I have a related question for anyone... |
Bible Note: Greetings Hank! While the first position is definitely a possibility, I don't see anyway that MacArthur's position can be justified from the text. Heb. 10:29 literally reads: "How much do you suppose worse he shall be deemed worthy of punishment he who the Son of the God has trampled under foot and the blood of the covenant common has considered by which he was made holy, and the Spirit of grace has insulted." There are a series of three aorist participles which describe the apostate. He has: 1) trampled under foot the Son of God. 2) considered the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified as common. 3) insulted the Spirit of grace. The subect of the sentence is the one who has done these three things, not Christ. Therefore, 'by which he was sanctified' cannot refer to Christ. As to the first option, I don't think that it makes sense of the context for the following reason. The word 'made holy' occurs four times from chapter 10 on, and it always refers to the action of Christ in making people holy. a) Heb. 10:10 - "And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." b) Heb. 10:14 - "because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy." c) Heb. 10:29 which we have discussed. d) Heb. 13:12 - "And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood." So, the question I would have is can Christ make a person holy without saving them? Well, I have to run now my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
