1 | What does "perish" mean? | Acts 8:13 | cwade | 69453
What does Peter mean when he says to Simon (the Sorcerer): "May your silver perish with you"? In Acts 8:13, Simon had believed and been baptized: Acts 8:13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed. But later, after trying to buy the power of the Holy Spirit from Peter and John in Acts 8:20, Peter rebukes him: Acts 8:20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!" Simon's salvation was already eternally secure, right? So how could he perish? Does the word "perish" here mean eternal separation from God? If so, would that not mean Simon had "lost" his salvation? Also -- what was the gift of God? I always thought that meant salvation through Christ. I thought Simon had already done that which was necessary (believed and been baptized) and had therefore already received the gift of God. For those of us who believe that our salvation can not be lost, how do we inerpret this verse? |

My Brother in Christ. I say this with love and also with warning. This can start an unwanted debate on this board. But I will give you my answer to this question in Love. Understand I am not and you are not anyones Judge but the Bible says in Hebrews Chapter 6 and Hebrews 10:26 there is no such thing as eternal security I believe eternal security to be a false doctrine. You cant be in sin and enter the kingdom of heaven Galatians 5:19-21. Also read the book 2nd peter read about the false teachers that used to be of like faith. ex: 2Peter 2 18-22. 18 For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who £have actually escaped from those who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,”£ and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” NKJV Dont mean to be harsh but the Word of God is Harsh sometimes. Brother, thank you for your reply. However, I must respectfully (and also in love) disagree with your position that eternal salvation is a false doctrine. It was not my intent to start that age-old debate:-)! Again, I appreciate the time you have taken to reply, but I was hoping for a response from my brothers who believe as I do that salvation is eternal. (I am convinced in my heart and mind that - that is the case)! In regards to your statement that Simon repented, I do not find that to be evident. Simon asked Peter to pray for him, he did not make any statement of remorse or remission of the sin. He seemed to be concerned only for his well-being, not that he had offended God. Again, thank you for your post. In Christ, cwade
4 | What does "perish" mean? | Acts 8:13 | habrown | 69459
As you say simon asked peter to pray for him I think that he repented or he wouldn't realized he needed prayer :) But you mean to tell me if you sin and continue to sin God will still allow you into heaven, I think not ! Read Rev 21:8 "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Also before you say you are convinced are you convinced by what someone has taught you or have you read the scriptures for yourself not trying to start a debate but you can't tell me God will accept sin into his kingdom The Word of says different.I do agree with you as far as saying a Conditional Eternal Security, Condition being -- you Live as Holy of a life as you can So I believe perish meant Going to hell for eternal punishment. Dont Take me too harshly or too softly and take the Word of God with a balance. God Bless Rev. Harold Brown |

I am not taking you too harshly or too softly. I know that the question of eternal security creates a strong emotional response in people. Again, it was not my intention to enter into that debate:-) In answer to your question; I base my belief on Scripture. Please do not take these words harshly, but for me, to say salvation is not eternal is to call both Jesus and Paul a liar. (Please note: I am not accusing YOU of doing that, just saying that for ME to say salvation is not eternal would make me feel that way). We both know all the scripture quoted on both sides of this issue, and doing so again is not going to change either of our minds... so could we agree (in love) to disagree? As to Simon's "repentance"... asking someone to pray for you does not mean you have repented. ALL of Simon's actions were self-serving and self-promoting. He was worried about himself, not the sin he had committed. |

6 | What does "perish" mean? | Acts 8:13 | Hank | 69465
cwade, I see your position on eternal security as fully scriptural and this post as an excellent exposition of your position. The refutation of the doctrine of eternal security of the believer must needs take us back on the well-trodden path of error that says, in effect, "Well, yes, Christ saves us but...." Enter: the "buts" -- but we must be baptized, but we must do good works, but we must not sin at all, and if we slip up and sin, even just a teeny bit, we must confess and ask forgiveness immediately or we're sinners again and straight on our way to destruction.... What all these "buts" mean (let's call them the bottom line) is simply to say that Christ's redemptive work on the cross is not enough. Puny man must step in and help God work things out. It is saying that God's grace is insufficient; that faith in His Son is not enough; that God's gift of salvation comes with attachments, limited warranties, conditions, expiration dates if you don't shape up and stay shaped up: see what this does? It puts man in tandem with God: man has a role in salvation. The Bible teaches no such thing. Salvation is of God, always has been, and ever shall be! --Hank

Thank you Hank. I always appreciate the time you take to mentor your weaker brothers. As I have said before, I have learned much from reading your posts. In regards to my original question on this thread... do you have a comment? I have reached a conclusion, but want to seek the counsel of more learned brothers before posting it. Prayerfully, cwade |
