1 | I have a related question for anyone... | Acts 8:13 | John Reformed | 69717 | ||
Dear David, You wrote: "I do not have faith in myself for salvation. That would be foolishness. I accept what Christ has paid for me. Jesus has done everything necessary for me to have eternal life; my only role is to repent and believe in His saving work on Calvary." You also have said "Salvation can't be lost, but it can be rejected". Heb 6:6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame These supposed believers are guilty of what? Falling away. What have they fallen away from? Faith in Christ. Why is it impossible for them to repent anew? They have crucified Christ and put Him to shame by their departure from the faith. But one might say that" those reprobates in Heb 6 MUST be true believers because they tasted of the heavenly gift, were partakers of the Holy Spirit, tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come." (Heb 6: 4,5). They certainly seem to be christians based upon the blessings they have experienced! However, the text does not say it explicitly. It says they "tasted" the heavenly gift but does not say they posessed it. They were said to "partake" of the Holy Spirit, but it does not say they were indwelt by Him. They "tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come but it does not tell us if they believed it. In short: Hebrews 6 is not a chapter, taken alone, that an unbiased reader can base a n entire doctrine upon. Especially in the light of the rest of the Bible. Are there other texts that may help us to understand Hebrews 6:6? Yes: 1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us. John 10:28,29 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. "My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. Rom 11:29 for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable Phil 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. 1 Pet 1:5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. This doctrine is clearly taught in these passages, John 10:28, 29; Rom. 11:29; Phil. 1:6; 1 Pet. 1:5. It, moreover, follows from a consideration of (1) the immutability of the divine decrees (Jer. 31:3; Matt. 24:22-24; Acts 13:48; Rom. 8:30); (2) the provisions of the covenant of grace (Jer. 32:40; John 10:29; 17:2-6); (3) the atonement and intercession of Christ (Isa. 53:6, 11; Matt. 20:28; 1 Pet. 2:24; John 11:42; 17:11, 15, 20; Rom. 8:34); and (4) the indwelling of the Holy Ghost (John 14:16; 2 Cor. 1:21, 22; 5:5; Eph. 1:14; 1 John 3:9). (Easton's Bible Dictionary) My question is: How far are some willing to go to protect the doctrine of "free will". Must we be free to reject Christ in Glory itself before we are considered "truly" free? A thousand times NO! True freedom is freedom from even the DESIRE to sin. God Bless, John |

John, I guess that's what I get for stating my position without having the time to to defend it scripturally. I won't have much time in the next few days to devote to this forum, so I can't explain anything in depth right now. I am a college student with finals on the way, so I need to devote my time to studying for that. Thank you for sharing your perspective and pointing me to some very intriguing scriptures. I will hopefully study them out in greater detail later. -David |
