1 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | kalos | 27739
The real evidence. Ephesians 5:18-20 (NASB) "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, *speaking* to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, *singing* and *making melody WITH YOUR HEART* to the Lord; always *giving thanks* for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;" (Emphasis added) ashestobeauty: For what it's worth, the Assemblies of God and other Pentecostal churches believe that tongues is the initial physical (outward) evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The AG author who wrote the book on the Holy Spirit teaches that tongues is the initial physical evidence. However, even he goes on to say that the BEST evidence of being filled with the Spirit is a changed life. This is not to dispute what you said, but to expand upon it. kalos |

2 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | ashestobeauty | 27748
I wrote the following to Hank, Which shows that I agree with what you wrote. :o) (I was brought up AG) The fact that salvation is offered and available can be reasoned out, but we are discussing the evidence of it, which comes through having faith and believing. It is a gift, not based on our good works, given by grace. We simply have to choose to believe that something that wonderful is free and for us. Same with Speaking in tongues. There will always be debates on this topic (of which I really do not care to get into) What I was trying to do is encourage someone who would like to have it. And in my statement that it is powerful in my life I would say that, just as in salvation, "you shall know them by their fruit". I am a changed person because of it. I used to be very independent and needed no one, I did everything in my own strength and only included God in MY PLAN when needed. I hurt a lot of people and offended many along the way. To the point of almost loosing my husband and ending up divorced. I tried to change myself, looked into counseling, and read a lot. But what helped the most was my times spent just "talking in tongues". When I was down and wanted to give up... this would build up my spirit man When I was in a bind and did not know what to pray for, I would just talk in tongues and God would show me what to do, when to do it and how. When my heart was troubled but I had no idea why, I would talk in tongues and a peace would come over me. When I would deal with issues about me and things I needed to change I would go before him and talk in my heavenly language and get incite and direction as to how HE was changing me, and I simply needed to abide in Him. So, to answer your question "how specifically is it a powerful tool in your walk with God" It has brought about change in me and my life, much faster and to a more effective degree than any book, councilor, tape, or support group ever could. It is one thing to have the Holy Spirit "dwelling in you" but you go to a whole other level when you allow Him to work in you, one of the ways to do this is through taking advantage of your gift of "speaking in tongues". You are giving Him Power to work in and through you. That's the power I was referring to. P.S. Because of the power of God’s Holy Spirit in me and the fact that I took advantage of the Gift of speaking in tongues, I am still married and happier than I’ve ever been, and I acctually WANT TO be a submissive wife and work in unity with my husband (that's proof of the power!), God is blessing our Ministry and it is growing, and I am a changed person who allows God to be in control of my life. I still “slip up” every now and then, but I simply go back to the closet, spend time with Him, and “babble” as needed :o). |

3 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | The Disciple | 27871
ashestobeauty, When I posted the question, I knew the responses I would get. There was intention to it, in the fact that I really want to know more about what alot of people call "the tongues issue". I have only gone to one church in my 10yrs as a Christian. And it happens to be AG. The first time I heard someone speak in a tongue I was totally freaked out. (which I find is common...both tongues and people freaking) An interpretation was then followed and a brief explanation by our pastor to what had transpired. Since then, many times I heard tongues ...no interpretation....words of knowledge with out tongues...and I can go on. But let me tell you, the first time was enough for me to seek counsel directly. And I did, first with questions to my wife who didnt know what to anwer other than look into HIS word. So I did, and 10yrs later...I dont think I have the total correct answer but I do believe I have a good grasp of what the tongues is for and how it should be utilized. We learn alot from 1Corinthians 12,13,14. And a few other books, but this letter by Paul was most influential in my conclusion. At this point I would hope you will allow me to address your post to Hank and Kalos. Please dont take this as a picking on you letter. I am not. I am only trying to help myself into a better understanding of this issue and hopefully to learn from it. I read literally everything I see and try to make a sense about it. So to your letter I saw some things I'd like to address and maybe learn from. In your first sentences you state that tongues is evedence that you are saved. You followed that quoting, "you shall know them by their fruit." I concur with the fruit as being a good helps in judging someones salvation. But I cannot say tongues is one of those fruit. The "fruit" that so often is quoted by US all I have found, is strictly the characteristics we are to have working through us, which is an extension of AGAPE love from the Lord. Gal 5:22,23 I would also like to know more about what you mean by: "It is one thing to have the Holy Sirit "dwelling in you" but you go to a whole other level when you allow Him to work in you, one of the ways to do this is through taking advantage of your gift of "speaking in tongues". You are giving Him Power to work in and through you." Your gift of tongues? Is it for everyone? IF so, and I do believe it is a gift from HIM ..just like all his other power gifts and less powerful gifts. Then why do I not flow in it? Could It be that I am trying to intelligize it or that I dont believe enough or that it isnt one of the gifts to work along the others HE has given me? You see, these questions have been usuals for me with this topic. I get told things like: I can enter a whole new/better/understandable level with God. Until, I start speaking/praying in tongues I dont know what I am missing out on. Your praying correctly to God for those things I dont know what to pray. I can add so many more to the list. I am not trying to say that your experience with this wonderful gift is wrong. I am not trying to dissuade your belief on this gift. All I want to say is....Godspeed to you m'lady. You have a wonderful understanding with HIM in this regard. As do I with the gift of prophecy and love and mercy, administration and teaching. Without those gifts from HIM I would not be who I am today in this world. Nor could I be discipled and be a discipler. Glory goes to HIM in the highest. ...Lord dont let me convolute the story... *SHALOM* |

4 | When will I speak/pray in tongues? | Acts 2:6 | ashestobeauty | 27884
Just want to clear up a few things. :o) I in no way think that salvation is based on speaking in tongues. The only way to be saved is John 3:16 and tongues is not mentioned anywhere there. In my statement "you shall know them by their fruit" I merely meant that the proof that tongues is effect in a believers personal life is when you can see it working and the person changing and producing good fruit. (like a saved marriage and a changed heart.) As far as "having the Holy spirit in you but not allowing Him to work through you" I believe there are many Christians (with and without tongues) that have the Holy Spirit in them (He is a part of the salvation process) but they never seek His direction, council, help, and don't listen to his reproof. They have him abiding in them but still live life without Him. (I did this for a long time, saved, and in ministry, but all in my own strength.) I hope this clears up the two things you talked about? :o) Please understand that I am not attacking those who do not speak in tongues, I have some wonderful very saved, friends who do not speak in tongues and are doing great things for God. It's like this: You can live without 1,000,000.00 dollars and still be happy and enjoy life and be effective in what you do.. but just think how much more you could do if you had it? That's how I feel about Tongues. There will always be those who do not believe it is for everyone, but who are we to decide who should have it and who shouldn't? I believe that there is a difference between "the Gift of Tongues" and being able to speak in tongues in your own time with God. (for the record I do not have the gift of "tongues and interpretation") I'll end with this... If you read this and you have a burning desire in your heart to be able to speak in tongues in your private time with God.. Then let Him know that desire and leave it up to Him (don’t go searching for it, allow Him to open up an opportunity for you to receive it. When that opportunity comes, you will know). He will give you the desire of your heart if He placed it there! If not He will take that desire away and it will fade in time and not be that important to you. And to you Discipled I end with this, Thank you for your ending remarks :o) This all started simply because I wanted to give you as much encouragement to seek whatever He has provided that will bring you closer to Him. It sounds like you are already well on your way :o) And I know that with or without “tongues” you will walk closely with Him. Isn't He wonderful! I could not imagine life without Him now that I have a relationship with Him. He truly is Good, All the time... (as I tell all my kids) And all Glory for all good things goes to Him. I Love Him so much! |
