Subject: When will I speak/pray in tongues? |
Bible Note: I agree with you, as Christians we tend to look to a pastor, tape, book, or Christian TV show to find our answers to "something more" when all we need is to get with God and find out what His Word instructs us to do. And even when some of us go there we don't like the answer (to honest and requires us to do something we don't want to) The bible is TRUTH and I have found that "The truth does set you free" but sometimes it also hurts in the process. So we avoid it. We try to get in every healing line and prayer line to solve our problems therefore all the "alter calls". Problem is the alter should be a place of repentance and recommitment to go back finding out what the word of God says and then living it. I will be out of the office for the holidays and be out of town in Jan. So I ask that you give me some time to respond to the following with scripture: My biggest problem with the seeking of the more "sensational" gifts is the complete loss of focus of WHY spiritual gifts are given to believers in the first place. Scripture shows clearly that the gifts we have are not for ourselves, but rather for the CHURCH (Ephesians 4:12-16, 2 Corinthians 10:8; 2 Corinthians 13:10). There is absolutely NO evidence for a special, private prayer language in Scripture as a gift from God. In fact, every instruction regarding speaking in tongues warns against elevating it to a level at which it does not belong, as well as instructing interpreters to be present. Private "speaking in tongues" edifies no one, makes sense to no human being (including the one doing the praying), and is not done in the context of the communion of saints. |
