Subject: Define "praying in the Holy Spirit" |
Bible Note: Dear brother I noticed in Acts 2 that "every man heard them speak in his own language" It would appear that on that day there were people listening from many languages and yet similtanuously they heard the message in their own tongue. The point I was making is that the speaker would be speaking in his own language, and it was the Holy Spirit which was doing the translation. I do agree that the "sign gift" of speaking in tongues was a gift given to the church as " a sign not to them that believe, but to them that believe not:" 1 Cor. 14:22 Regarding "praying in the Spirit" which my personal understanding and experience is when we stand on our feet and lead the congregation out in worship and praise to our Saviour, that there are times when the Spirit of God seems to focus our minds and thoughts on Christ and on God. In other words it is not just saying prayers or praises. I did not intend to imply that I was reaching some supernatural level. What is praying in the spirit, and praying with understanding? In the references to follow we can see that it refers to a person being lead by the Holy Spirit in prayer in a language which is understandable to those who listen. Paul says in V14 "if I speak in an unkown tongue , my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful" This is why they are exhorted to use an interpreter for the edifiction of the listeners. I believe Paul summerizes praying with understanding in V. 19 "Yet in the church I had rather speak 5 words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, then 10 thousand words in an unknown tongue." What do you think? Peace in our Saviour's Name Robert |
